This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Simon W;295649Sorry you weren't impressed with the free version of Barbarians of Lemuria (BoL). It was never intended to be a "first draft" or "first edition" or any other sort of preview. It was just supposed to be a free game that might appeal to a few people. It went online 5-6 years ago.

Anyway, a lot of people did like it, prompting me to look at a fuller/more complete version. It took a while because I first had the idea of obtaining the licence (it is based on Lin Carter's Thongor). This fell through however and I lost interest in further work on it.

However, again largely due to the feedack I was getting from people who played/liked it and wanted the gaps "filled in" I decided to re-write it and make up my own version of Lemuria (basically Thongor's Lemuria with the serial numbers filed off). The pdf went on sale in November and has outsold any of my other games in just 5 months (most of them have been on sale a couple of years or more). The printed version (via LULU) has sold well, Leisure Games in London have re-ordered three times and it is one of their best-sellers.

The "controversy" has been due to one or two posters on RPGNet commenting on the artwork - both the quality and the fact that there are nipples on show. The former is being addressed- the guys that did the French translation that went on sale this week have let me use their artwork, so a new version will be available in a few days, with all-new art and improved layout. It is not a second edition, it is an update, so anyone who bought the pdf should be able to download it again, for free.

The "nipple" issue - well that's a staple of sword & sorcery, so there are still some scantily clad women in the book.

I'm looking at options for the revised print version though - as I mentioned in the Cubicle 7 thread, I have been discusssing a printing/marketing/distribution deal with Angus Abranson. There are a couple of other options I'm looking at. Anyway, that's for the future.

Any other questions? Oh, btw there is a review at RPGNet and 9 reviews/comments on RPGNow, to get a flavour of the game.

About a year ago I thought about looking in to a Thongor-inspired/lisenced product. Wow. Okay, you sold me on picking up BoL based soley on that tidbit of information.

ADDITION: Also, I empathize with your problem with the "nipple" effect. I had a a bit of nudity (and one picture with the heresy of violence and nudity) in one of my own published works and received some serious negative feedback. I was especially appalled at the people who bought the book for their children (even though it was labelled as a mature book only) and then complained about its content as inappropriate. I mean, I appreciate their concern....but as a social libertarian I despise thought police.

If you have the pdf, you can download the updated version for free.

When will the updated PDF be? Or is it the 2nd edition available via DTRPG already?

Is the pdf available now the "revised" edition, or will that only be available in print?  It looks really cool from what i've been hearing.  Put me in the pro-nipples column.

Everything about this sounds pretty excellent and I'll probably break out of my RPG-miserly stage after the holidays to pick this up!

Question about the Careers: Are they freeform, make-up your own traits sort of thing or a list you pick and choose from? Neither one is a deal breaker...
