Outside of the Core 3 Books, what was Great in AD&D 1E?

S'mon

Quote from: danskmacabre;1077805Yeah I could have chased it up, but I only heard about their replacement policy several months after the book was in a really bad state, so I just didn't bother chasing it.
As I live in Australia, I figured it'd be a hassle to get a replacement arranged from the USA.

They shipped to me fine in UK and it was well over a year since purchase that I requested new copies of PHB & MM. They were great.

Quote from: danskmacabre;1077764Yep, I bought a first print PHB of DnD 5e and it didn't take long for the pages to start falling out.

Mine is still in good shape, also a 1st print, errors and all. Though all 3 core books arrived with warped pages. Just had to squash them under other books for a week to flatten them out. At a guess they were shipped too soon and the pages had not had time to cure or equivalent.

Curse of Strahd though creaks and cracks every time I open it which is worrysome. But it is still fine.

My favorite of the non-core AD&D books was the Manual of the Planes.

I don't own the 1st edition MotP, but I do own the 3rd and 4th editions.  4th edition; mainly for the Feywild and Shadowfell chapters.  Otherwise, I prefer the 3rd edition MotP.

I thought 3e MoTP was really great too.

Fiend Folio with all the wacky UK monsters people submitted to White Dwarf back when it was an RPG gaming magazine. Too bad they didnt do a FF2 as there were many more that never made it into FF.

The Spaniard

The World of Greyhawk setting was awesome.  Still use it today.  MMII was a nice addition, as was UA.

1e Greybox Forgotten Realms is ridiculously good. The 1e regional splats that supported Forgotten Realms were superb as well. The Kara-Tur Boxset is one of my favorite  RPG products *EVER* (also set in the Realms).

Mordred Pendragon

I love the three corebooks to AD&D 1E a lot, and I have to admit there are a lot of good materials for 1E as well, some of which can be easily mixed with early 2E stuff.

The Must-Have AD&D Books
Monster Manual (1977)
Players Handbook (1978)
Dungeon Master Guide (1979)
Boot Hill, Second Edition (1979)*
Deities & Demigods (1980)
Oriental Adventures (1985)**

Great Modules & Campaign Settings
I6: Ravenloft
Ravenloft: Realm of Terror***
Forgotten Realms Grey Box****

Good for Cherry-Picking
Unearthed Arcana*****
Fiend Folio
Monster Manual 2

No Opinion
Wilderness Survival Guide
Dungeon Survival Guide

*-Technically its own separate game but it has guidelines for crossover with AD&D in both the Boot Hill rules and in the 1E DMG

**-I love this book and it is a must-have for East Asian campaigns, especially if it is based on Feudal Japan. I could even use it in "Western" campaign settings for foreigner characters

***-Technically an early 2E release, but is mostly compatible with 1E save for a few things. The Realm Of Terror black box is my favorite iteration of my favorite published campaign setting

****-I have not read this yet, but it has garnered my interest and while I am normally not a FR guy, I have been doing research on Forgotten Realms in 1E and I like what I have seen so far

*****-Mainly for the Barbarian class and the Drow sub-race of Elf. Cavaliers can also work if tweaked to be a sub-class of Fighter instead of its own fully dedicated class.

Unearthed Arcana was my fave 1e book. Oriental adventures was great too, we made a number of martial arts from it and it gave our regular games that extra level of kickassery.

Razor 007

This year marks 40 Years for the Complete Collection of 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Core 3 Books.

40 years ago; all 3 books were on the market, and we are STILL talking about them now.  Hell, some people are still running games with that rule set.

Really? I remembered being so excited to get it and then being very underwhelmed by it. And this was reminded to me when I got the recent deluxe reprint. There's very little in it that made 1e better.

I remember being all excited about it, but really all I can for sure remember we used from it was weapon specialization. I know I didn't like any of the character classes.  Maybe we used the new spells and magic items.

I use a fair amount from UA. Spells and items mostly. But a few other elements too. I do ot recall if we ever used the alternative chargen rules or not. Pretty sure someone did. But its been a while.
