This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Why do all Superhero RPGs suck?

Quote from: Simlasa;937565I'll take manga recommendations as well... or non-Japanese superhero comics that seem to stand out as being good RPG fodder.

Well, then - Claymore FTW! Play it with something like Mythras, and a corruption mechanic that makes you stronger, but worsens your odds for making the "save roll" the more you had powered up... (Kuro might already have it, not sure. Still reading through it).

Fist of the Blue Sky is up there, too, if you want ideas about powered people having to fit in with normal society.

I'm sure you'd get more than that, too, but those are the ones I would recommend;).

I've only watched the anime series, but that was pretty great... gave me loads of ideas. I really should track down the manga, since those usually go into greater detail.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica was another I liked a lot, and had a similar thing with supers who were slowly inching towards becoming monsters. (though I doubt I'd ever find a group that wanted to play in that setting as THOSE characters).

I ran a Mutants and Masterminds game based on that. Yeah... It was a short game. :D

Quote from: Gronan of Simmerya;937530I see.  You can talk shit about other peoples' preferences, but if somebody talks shit about yours it's all "boo hoo mommy."

Not exactly. I'm just sick of Marvel and DC dominating American pop culture. You can hate anime and shit-talk it all you want, but don't call me a retard just because I'm sick of superheroes dominating the geek scene.

Well, Gronan, I think thats the first time in a long while a poster here has made me laugh out loud. I probably owe you a beer now.

Quote from: cranebump;937451Claremont's run WAS pretty good, and I don't even like the X-Men.

Quote from: ThatChrisGuy;937471You just revealed to me why I never liked Chris Claremont's writing much.  I never glommed on to it but now I see it I agree with this completely.

I also want to stress that IN MY OPINION, Claremont was both the best and worst thing that ever happened to the X-Men.  He made a lot of the female characters more interesting, whether it was with raw power boosts, or personality, but at the same time, he focused entirely on them, leaving the male characters to languish in obscurity and badly written land.  But I will, despite my dislike of the inequality of his characterization skills, he DID do good work when he had Byrne to keep him on a leash.

Quote from: AsenRG;937553Because someone who doesn't like superhero comics probably is fed up with the opposite of Garth Ennis;)? He's very good at providing the opposite of the "average" superhero comic, and I'm recommending a superhero comic to someone who doesn't like the genre.
Or simply because I like his approach, and think that people who suddenly get superpowers are more likely to behave like his characters than the way masked crimefighters tend to do in comics:D?

See, this is why you need a point-buy system like Hero to design comic book characters, whether they're superheroes or not.  If you made PREACHER as a d20 game you wouldn't be able to design a template for the Irish Vampire, Chinless Fuck or Arseface prestige classes. :D

Well, allow me to clarify.

I'm sure there are good superhero comics out there somewhere, I've just not seen one myself personally. That is all. The fact that contemporary geek culture is so dominated by Marvel and DC doesn't help my perception of matters though.

And Tristram, if you lived in the Gothic-Punk hillbilly shithole that is Roanoke, Virginia, then New Jersey would look awesome to you too.

Southwestern Virginia is a hellhole. And you know how I feel about hellholes. The average resident of the Roanoke Valley Metropolitan Area is like a bizarre hybrid of Early Culyer and the Goth Kids from South Park.

So when I get enough money saved up, I'll head up north to Jersey and drink like Dean Martin on a bender.

I'm not particularly interested in piling on with the rest (although you made your bed, lie in it, etc.). However, this particular desire is simply not... I don't even know the right word.. reasonable? realistic? kinda not even acceptable because your saying you want other people to change their preferences because you don't like some specific thing.

It's not realistic in that it isn't going to change, and complaining here isn't going to effect that. It's not reasonable because it is trivially easy in this day and era to invest yourself in another form of pop culture if you don't like the most mainstream one (as you ability to indulge in anime exemplifies). This isn't 1979 and you are limited to geek discussions at your FLGS or Comix shop between the Radio Shack and the oil-change place. There are thousands of sites on the internet dedicated to anime, manga, anime-like webcomics (I'm not clear if those would just be anime or a separate thing). Also not reasonable because the same is true for any other slicing of the pop culture pie you want to examine. If you are a sci fi person, American pop culture would like to interest you in a couple of things called Star Wars and Star Trek. Would you prefer to read Lensmen or Foundation or Red Mars? Literally nothing stopping you. Prefer obscure acid jazz to Taylor Swift? Have at it! The internet exists and the world is your oyster. And back to acceptable, what does something dominating the geek scene mean to you? Only that you can't go to your favorite geek pop culture hangout (virtual or in homine) and assume that the person you sit down next to is going to be interested in the same thing you are. Well darn, I guess they should change their preferences for your benefit. I know that's not what you actually are asking for, but it is the logical conclusion of the complaint you leveled. Does it look a little more absurd now?
