To play devil's advocate, the Harn setting is probably superior to my own homebrew fantasy setting.

Modules can be useful, but one of my players recently told me they like my games better when I don't use a module. Mainly because modules tend to have illogical elements in them and I don't always completely fix the module.

I have run against the giants/decend/Kuotoa/Vault/demonweb as a campaign several times and those modules rock.

Yes, I have more energy now as I heal after the surgery - gradually. Also, Dragon Naturally Speaking allows me to write again, when typing one handed is exhausting and gives me cramps from the necessary contortions. :D

I've ran my own homebrewed campaign world for the past 21 years called "Beyond the Pale".

Beyond the Pale RPG is a project several years in the making. After our stint with Forgotten Realms in the early 90's, and our move towards Planescape, our gaming group grew tired of high fantasy material. In that, I went back to the drawing board and developed my own gaming world, taking elements from many settings and creating a pastiche from many different influence that has become one of my passions over the years.
 
In short, it is a low magic, politically-charged world that is entirely humanocentric. Some of the more interesting conceits of the game revolve around the resolution of a great internal war that has torn asunder one of the most influential and resource rich nations in the known world. Political houses struggle against one another against a backdrop of war with the foreign nation, as as secret cloak and dagger-style political civil war rages its own borders. Although the campaign has primarily centered around a small nation called Aglador, several other nations have been developed.
 
As I pride myself on the little details, the three major faiths is both rich and familiar - particularly the faith of the Divine Source. It combines the foundations of modern monotheism into the faith of three primary gods - the Steward, the Martyr and the Learner. Both the peoples and the places of the known world are exotic and deeply developed, built upon the rich tapestry of storytelling from both the players and myself.

I utilize a Wiki-style private website, where every note I've ever written about the game now sits. The entire website is literally riddled with clickable keywords with over 1,500 pages of information.

I am also proud to say that the campaign has been powered by ZWEIHÄNDER for nearly two years now.

Yeah, I'm going to add my voice to that. The idea that "nobody cares" is bullshit. I care. I might not remember your homebrew idea 6 months from now, but reading it, I will notice some things I like, other things I think "meh", and that'll make its way in my imagination in some way, shape or form to influence my inspiration afterwards. And it's cool to be exposed to other people's ideas and have the creative juices running like that.

So I take objection to the whole "nobody cares" bullshit. Fuck you. I care. ;)

I'm between games now, but the last setting I ran (Gompan) was based on pre-Three Kingdoms Korea and used RQ3.  I've been on this "discover my heritage" kick the last few years, and watching a lot of historical K-Drama with my wife and my mother inspired me.

I intend to re-write that setting entirely one day.  My notes are fragmentary and scattered now (my attempt to create a wiki for centralized information dissemination was aborted).

My next game will be a fairly small sandbox using the Hudson Valley as the map, but completely reimagined using the names of modern towns and cities as inspiration for what's in the area.  I've got a lot of scribbles, but nothing substantial as music has been taking up all my free time of late.  I'm about to leave one group, so I may start running Mrs. HR and a couple friends after the holidays using my heretical D&D variant.
For fuck\'s sake, these are games, people.

Nothing fancy.  Hadrian's Wall with orcs in a setting where I took a crack at having a benign theocracy, mostly.  My worldbuilding tends to take a Suikoden-style approach of setting one campaign within a single region, the next campaign in someplace adjacent, and so forth, so I won't have much beyond "Hadrian's Wall with orcs + theocracy" until I get to the next campaign.

As for me, I'm running a game set in AS&SH's Hyperborea. Now the twist relevant to this thread is that it's using my homebrew mega-dungeon sandbox as part of the Savage Boreal Coast, and I basically mix that regional setting goodness with my vision of a sort of fantasy pulp version of the Central Coast of British Columbia with aboriginals, picts, vikings and the like. The actual play thread is right there.

By 1990 enough changes accumulated to change Judges Guild's Wilderland of High Fantasy into the Majestic Wilderlands. Throughout the early 90s I retconned the events of the 80s campaigns into the history of Majestic Wilderlands.

The key to whole thing was running successive campaigns in the same setting and allowing the consequences of what the players did spill over into the background for the next campaign. Sometimes this resulted in minor retcons as players wanted more details on a particular aspect that was glossed over before.

When I wanted to try different fantasy tropes I just picked out an area of the Wilderlands and detailed it using what I wanted to run for the campaign.

The strength of homebrew setting really shines if you keep on using it for successive campaigns. By setting new campaigns in different areas or even different time periods you can keep things fresh but yet gain the advantage of further fleshing your setting.

I'm running a setting based on a TSR wargame, Divine Right. It's on a landmass called "Minaria", a fantasy world complete with dwarves, elves, ogres, and all....no orcs (I just reskin them as big goblins when they come up in modules that I retool for the world).
