This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Who's Got Star Wars?

So on another forum they've mentioned that Mongoose tried to get the Star Wars license but failed, and it went to "another company".

Anyone have any idea which company that is?
Its not Mongoose, obviously, nor is it Wizards; so who else would it be?

If anyone has any juicy info, post it.

If anyone knows the truth, and wants to send it to me personally, I will guarantee the anonymity of my sources.

Better question to ask:  who can afford such a license?

Possible candidates:

- Paizo
- Fantasy Flight Games
- Cubicle 7

and maybe:

- Steve Jackson Games ?
- Green Ronin ?
- White Wolf ?

Koltar

Take SJG off that list - I doubt they could afford it.
Only way thats likely to happen is if some powerful exec at Lucasfilm really likes SJG and gave them a bargain on the license after talking Lucas into it.

Possible scenarios with various companies.

Paizo - They briefly did a Star Wars magazine.  Don't know if they want to be tied up with another license, which can be revoked easily.

Cubicle 7 - They must be busy doing a Lord of the Rings rpg.  They're already doing a Doctor Who rpg.

Fantasy Flight - They're already doing Warhammer FRP, Rogue Trader, Dark Heresy, etc ... along with tons of board games.

Steve Jackson Games - Dunno how an official Star Wars GURPS would turn out.

Green Ronin - They're already busy with DC Heroes and "A Song of Ice and Fire".  Dunno if they have the resources to put into a Star Wars rpg.

White Wolf - They seem to be more interested in MMORPGs than tabletop rpgs these days.  Though they could always do a 180.  ;)

According to the original Mongoose blog post about this topic, this particular Star Wars license simultaneously covers card games, RPGs, and miniatures.

Besides Wizards of the Coast, who else has existing in-house expertise for all three of card games, rpgs, and miniatures ?

FFG is one of the few other companies out there that could handle it.  They've certainly got the expertise to handle all aspects of the various games and they seem to have enough resources to snap up licenses.   But still it seems like an odd fit.

Though should that happen the fanboy battle lines I think will be epic.

Guess this means Star Wars will be the winner in the "most number of rules interpretations of a fictional gaming milieu" then won't it?

Yaaaaaaaaayyy.

How many times people gotta buy this shit before they get tired of plunking down cash for the same thing over and over?

-and no, no need to answer that; I grok the business end of the "why."   Just don't like it too much, that's all.

--and I'll probably wind up liking the game and so on and so on...
I start from his boots and work my way up. It takes a good half a roll to encompass his jolly round belly alone. Soon, Father Christmas is completely wrapped in clingfilm. It is not quite so good as wrapping Roy but it is enjoyable nonetheless and is certainly a feather in my cap.

Got Star Wars d6. Got Star Wars SAGA. Got my SW gaming covered, personally.

Quote from: Benoist;425941Yeah. I'm thinking FFG.

Brilliant.  Does that mean we can finally have a Star Wars RPG with sensible resolution mechanics like color-coded dice with special symbols, a lightsaber spinner or, if we're really lucky, an R2-D2 bopper? :D

I'm pretty sure that they already are a playable species in Saga Edition, perhaps even in d20 Revised as well.

Another possible company with deep pockets whom in principle can buy the Star Wars license, is Games Workshop.

Mongoose Matt said that the company that got the license did miniatures, but wasn't known for them (link).  I think that (sadly) puts GW out.

I'm betting Fantasy Flight...

Interesting. Somebody designing the game actually thought "hey I think people would want to play one of those impish blue flying faux Italians"

I heard the Toydarians are supposed to be releated to the Hutts. Despite the fact they have nothing in common except criminal tendancies.
