This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I accidentally the OD&D. How do you level?

Just *bam*, then and now (well, we wait until the current combat is over, of course). Also, by our house rules it re-sets your spells for the day. Sometimes if we get on a good roll, you can level a couple of times per session and still have most of your high-end spells functional.

XP is doled out between sessions.

Additional hit points and new attack bonus/THAC0 are effective immediately, i.e. beginning next session, regardless of in-game circumstances.

New spells, of course, require R&R.

Special abilities are on a case-by-case basis. Thief skills require training, but improvements to the Cleric's turning are also effective immediately.

Back in the day, our DM has a house rule that in addition to having the requisite XP, we also had to train to go up in levels.  This was accomplished out-of-game (between sessions) and cost 100GP/level in addition to of course the availability of a trainer in the area where the party was adventuring. (monastery for clerics, fighters guild, thieves guild, etc etc)  if none were available at the time, you'd have to wit til you "got back to town", or a suitable training area.

I seem to remember HP were accrued immediately (without training) but new abilities/spells wouldn't kick in until training occurred.

XP are calculated between sessions. Characters can level up as soon as they get a night's full rest in the next session. As we try to stop at a night's rest when we wrap up a session (although we don't always manage this), characters are usually ready to go at their new level when we start.

I give out fight XP right after the combat and loot XP when the stuff is brought out of the danger zone and back to town.  Leveling up occurs as soon as the XP are scored.

The D&D comic "order of the stick" had levelling up during combat, and you could literally level up in the middle of a fight. This was mostly for comic value, and produced an occasional weird result.

BTW, leveling up should be accompanied by an audible bell tone, so people know it happened.

In my games the xp is usually given at the end of the session, so leveling up happens then too.

Same here. Depending on the campaign, a period of training might also have to occur and be accounted for, especially if a wizard is picking up a new spell from another wizard. Usually the training is assumed to have been ongoing though.

Doubt anyone cares that much but I'll do it on a by-campout basis.

I'll also probably alter adventuring rules to allow elves to switch between spellcasting and fighting on a by-campout basis.
