Which version of the Airship Pirates RPG is best?

(1/2) > >>

Batjon:
I own the previous Airship Pirates RPG hardback that used the Victoriana 2e (Heresy) system by Cakebread & Walton/Cubicle 7 and I have perused the newer Airship Pirates RPG by Cakebread & Walton that uses their rules-lite OneDice system.  I've been worried that the OneDice system might not be as robust as I'd like but I read one review that claimed it has surprising depth despite its simplicity.

I'm trying to decide which one I'd prefer.

Which version do you think is best?

Tantavalist:
As someone who owns the original version of Airship Pirates, what I'd ask is why you'd want the setting rather than a new set of rules for it. It's one of the few RPGs that I've bought because it looked cool and then later regretted. The background is bad and the rules aren't really anything to write home about.

Honestly, I'd advise you to just grab whatever ruleset works best for you and then adapt it to a setting that has Airship Pirates. I guarantee that any gamer into the Steampunk genre could create a better setting than Abney Park did just brainstorming on the premise.

As you might guess, I'd suggest looking at the OneDice system simply because I feel it can't be worse than the original Airship Pirates ruleset. But not before looking at other rule systems for Steampunk in general.

Batjon:
Does anyone have any suggestions for great steampunk rules systems that can do airships with pirates? I'd rather not shoehorn it into a game not designed for steampunk and then have to write rules for airships and such myself.

You should check out Sundered Skies for Savage Worlds. It has airships and pirates and weird steampunkish tech.

I've actually owned Sundered Skies for many years.
