This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Which Stars Without Number hardcover?
« on: December 01, 2018, 09:10:27 AM »
I've only read the PDFs and it is just such a useful game/supplement! I believe there is a Core 1e, Universal Omnibus, and Revised versions.

If I was to put a hardcover version of Stars Without Number on my shelf, which should it be? Why?

The Universal Omnibus was a Kickstarter exclusive, so you can't get it easily.  Someone will have to sell you theirs and it is a meaty tome.  I think that it could eat a HERO system book for breakfast.

I haven't plunked down for a Print on Demand yet, but I'm probably going to get a copy of Revised.

Revised.  Streamlined skills, fleshed out hacking and psionics, ascending AC, completely revamped starship combat for the better.  Oh, and mechs.

Don't know about the others, but the Revised edition hardcover is beautiful. I just received mine this week.

well, checking ebay, the only place I can find used copies of 1st ed in hardcover (which you specified in your initial post) the starting cost is $63, and has to be shipped from the UK.  1st ed was a 200 page book, and all in black and white. (also the edition in question is the one Mongoose published, which has some questionable quality control issues). if you want a NEW copy of 1st ed, you would have to settle for paperback from drivethru.
Revised, from Drivethru, is $60-80 (the difference between the 2 is color quality, but I'll be damned if I could tell the difference), is a brand new book, so it doesn't have any mysterious stains that aren't reported, and is a 310 page book with a bunch of options that were in the 1st ed's suppliment line, and shows how Kevin has grown and learned as a game developer since he first published SWN1 (his first game I seem to recall) as well as having some nice bits from his other games as well.

So, if you are JUST looking at the cost, you should get the POD revised $60, it has a greater page count than the original edition, a binding quality you can count on, and comes with a free copy of the PDF.

as a side note, I have around 50 PoD books from drivethru, and I've only had an issue with 1 of them. the first 48 pages were only printed on 1 side (making 24 pages of info) and the next 16 were blank. Drivethru couldn't have been nicer, and after I sent them a couple of photos showing them the printing error, they sent me a free replacement copy via express mail.

hope you enjoy the book. be warned tho, his stuff is pretty damn good, and you might start to think to yourself, "well, Other Dust is set on earth after the scream in SWN so I should get that for more options..."

and then you think "Silent Legions, his Lovecraftian RPG would be great to add some horror themes to the game, as well as incorperate cults to various potential megafauna"

and then you think, "Scarlet Heroes has more things for running solo adventures than what is in SWN, I should grab that..."
then you think "hell, I have all his other games, I should grab Godbound."

And then you're wondering why your wallet wants to beat you, because you've got all these great books, but it's empty.

Yeah I pretty much have all of Sine Nomine's stuff. Much of it in Hardback physical copies.
His material is very good quality and very useful, even if you don't run the game itself.

Another voice for Revised... and another voice for recommending Sine Nomine's other products. It's good stuff.
