This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Which Is Better for RPGs, G+ or Actual Play?

I used to play way back on WebRPG before it vanished.

I RP heavily online but with limited mechanics interference aside from an ongoing Astral Frontier campaign with my old crew scattered around the world now.

But for straight up RPGing I prefer tabletop.

Friend of mine though has been urging to try some sort of networking RPG system that allows maps and rolling. May give it a whirl eventually,

I have also heard of people using NWN 1 and 2 for online RPing. Though some of the accounts sound more like min-max-charopping PVP messes than actual RPing.

I don't touch my computer at all during a role-play session on G+ Hangout.

Quote from: Shawn Driscoll;706774I would like to see a YouTube video though of an RPG session played by a group at a table where there are no distractions or disruptive players involved.  But I don't think such a gaming group is interested in promoting role-playing via the Internet.  Unless some of the players go home and blog about it or buy the game for themselves because of the game session they just played at someones house.
There was a Scottish guy who uploaded a few videos of himself and his friends doing CoC a while back, a large group too, I've no idea where the thread is now though.
"These children are playing with dark and dangerous powers!"
"What else are you meant to do with dark and dangerous powers?"
A concise overview of GNS theory.

Then what do you use to access G+ Hangout?
"Meh."

Why would you play on G+ with hangouts, when you can play on Roll20 for free and it's such a better system?

I typically play games that don't use grids or miniatures, so I haven't been that curious about Roll20, which seems very map oriented.

I am looking for something, though, that would let players create and save (on a long term basis - no whiteboards where there's a single command to wipe off all the scrawls!) a large, zoomable wilderness map.

Depends on how integral any of the Premium pay content is to gameplay? So far looks like only minis and map sets so I'd guess no impact at all?

I do both.  G+ has Roll20 integrated into it as an app.  I like G+ because you can use other apps in partnership with Roll20
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

Quote from: TristramEvans;706643I could do something like De Profundis online

De Profundis is an epistolary RPG (well, psychodrama). There is no F2F element.

I'm a luddite and I have been very impressed by my G+ gaming experience, much better than expected (and very clear when using my iPad). It's not superior at all, certainly inferior for teaching anyone new to the hobby, but the convenience is fantastic. Also, I can play without trousers.

You would need to first ascertain whether or not most people (who play RPG's) would have gotten in to the hobby if they had read a transcript rather than had witnessed a real live game...

I have not used the premium content, and it seems it offers very little.  The only thing I'd like about that stuff is they have a lot more mini-images.  But, since you can upload your own minis images any time you please for free, I have not really missed them.  I heard dynamic lighting also comes from the premium service, so I guess that might be nice.

Yeah you can do a wilderness map, that would always be there, using Roll20.  It also integrates with G+ Hangouts (there is a big button right there on the main screen, to open it with Hangouts).

RPGPundit

I don't really care what's "better" for RPGs; I don't care for online gaming, while I love actual play.
