This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Where the heck is D&D 5e?

Quote from: Endless Flight;707675You have to use the playtest rules.

I've looked through the playtest rules, but I can't get excited until I see some artwork and good layout and all that jazz. To me, it looks just like one of the Word documents I have on my computer, even down to the Cambria 11-point font.

+1.

I'm still waiting for some sort of update from WotC that nails down what we've got from the playtest, exactly, and where we are going. Something like, here is the core PDF, have fun until we release the full version with modules included. Something that tells me, yeah, I can get on board right now, I agree with this core version, and everything else is just modular add-ons/gravy from here.

WHAT!!!!

You mean give you the REAL version of the core game for nothing so they could get feedback and fix the print version in time to save oodles of annoying errata from going to print!

Yeah right.
Quote from: JonWakeGamers, as a whole, are much like primitive cavemen when confronted with a new game. Rather than \'oh, neat, what\'s this do?\', the reaction is to decide if it\'s a sex hole, then hit it with a rock.

Quote from: Old Geezer;724252At some point it seems like D&D is going to disappear up its own ass.

Quote from: Fiasco;707864I'm generally indifferent to 5E but the bitterness of TCO and Trollman bitch GamerGoyf makes me hope WOTC knock this one out of the park. In any case it would be hard to make a shitter D&D than 4E if you tried.

Incidentally has there ever been stranger bedfellows than Goyf and TCO? The unifying power of hate!
Well the nice thing about this debate is that it will at some point end, next year 5e is going to be released and it will either succeed or fail. Then well see who was living in la la land and who was doing sober analysis.

If 5e does succeed it'll be a shock to a lot of people that's for sure, like Monte Cook and Bruce Cordel who both apparently decided they wouldn't put their name on Next for actual money. Heck Mike Mearls probably isn't very confident in his design either. Given how the playtest was clearly ruse so WotC would let him keep cashing paychecks for year without having to release anything.

It would be hilarious if this was indeed his primary motive.

Most likely we'll never know the entire truth, unless he admits it in a deathbed confession.

The last public playtest document is out. They also released that version in a physical product. I don't think you are going to get a more nailed down version until 5e is actually released. But you have more now than most RPGs give you in advance of their release.

2014 (next year) will be the 40th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons. I would guess that heavily influences when the 5th edition gets released.

I just got them 5 minutes ago, so they will still send them out.

(and to clarify, I just signed up 5 minutes ago as well)

Thanks. Its an impressive bundle, even with my dislike of D&D5e.

Dude, you're just FrankTrollman's mouthpiece. Seriously if we want to know what he has to say we'll just get it from the man himself rather than his stooge/sock puppet.

5E may be a bust or it may be rather good, no-one knows. It's just rather pathetic that you have invested so much in the hope its a flop because it doesn't follow Trollman's design principles.

So, I am wondering why they don't have a link up on their site where anyone can swing by and simply download.

I am sure there is link to the playtest elsewhere on the site. You are the first person I have seen who has expressed difficulty finding it.

As for a straight download, it's a playtest version being distributed for free. Like all other playtest releases, WotC will want to keep some track on how many distinct people download it for their own development purposes (and I assume they see value with more people lodging accounts with them too). Hence the needed to register to get the playtest version.

Bummer.

They need to do some more press releases or something. Drum up some more buzz. Their advertising is fail.

You are supposed to sign up for the playtest and answer their questionaire. Fewer people would sign up for the questionaire otherwise so it is a viable idea to get more responses.
