This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What's The Last RPG-Related Purchase You've Made?

Quote from: BrantaiIt gets a lot easier after the first few sessions.  The trick is to introduce the subsystems slowly.
The other trick is to remember that the players are responsible for the rules too. Offload. And once you are past the short curve it is fast, especially for the amount of "crunch" it has. DoW melds with the "roleplaying", and before long you'll find yourself rarely talking about the dice at all, just rolling. (Ironically the combat tends to sound that way too, "roleplay". Assuming you write dark enough/large enough for the other players to read your actions. ) Just like any game I suppose.

Quote from: PaladinCAGood luck with that one.  I borrowed a copy from a friend of mine and gave myself a total nosebleed after about sixty pages.  There are some really good ideas in there, but I sure as hell will never be able to GM it.

I got through Burning Empires, which is at least as thick and complicated. I'm hoping BW will be an easier sell to my group because the guys I game love fantasy games and aren't interested in sci-fi beyond a certain limit (that limit being Shadowrun).

Just to catch you guys up, I've bought these few things in the last months:

Castles & Crusades: PH and M&T. It really is like a new editionof the old AD&D...if that makes any sense. It's even got the same writing style as EGG himself.

The Palladium RPG: I got it for cheap, used and along with Mystic China. It's missing page 51, which seems to be the back end of the equipment list.

Gurps: Characters: Imagine my dissapointment when I found out this is an incomplete book. Not in the missing a page way like above, but it requires you also own campaigns to be able to understand it. I thought this would be like a players guide, but it doesn't have ANY of the game rules in it, only the info for character creation. Oh well, campaigns is on the way, so is powers.

BW is way easier IMO since you don't have all the maneuver and scene rules, although there is a bit more fiddly bits in the DoW and combat. There are a lot of sections you can skip with BW. For example I've played entire campaigns without using Fight!, just using Bloody Versus or just bog Versus. Once you have the Hub and Spokes going, start with Duel of Wits. Faith anytime is fine. Then Range & Cover. Add Sorcery and Fight! last, as they seem appropriate. Fight! is by far the most fiddly bits section, and usually takes the most to get your head around.

EDIT: One quirk is that since BE was written after a number of years of BW being out there and lots and lots of play under the belt BE has a few refinements that are immediately portable back to BW. Such as the rules for how to run a 3-way DoW. BW doesn't really cover that, and it's not something that comes up that often, but that's where I go when it does.

P.S.  I personally have been trying out a new tact for combat in a Burning THAC0 game. Sort of a "say it, roll it" version of Fight!/Range & Cover to give a somewhat coarser granularity feel than true Fight! but finer than straight Versus. But I'm a bit off the map as far as the rules as written go with that, and am just feeling my way now. I wouldn't recommend it till you've got the game proper down. I'm also not entirely happen setting aside the scripting. I'm definitely heading back to scripting within a short order.

I bought Spycraft 2.0 about two weeks ago. It's the first game that actually made me like D20. In fact, it's even made me somewhat enthusiastic about running a D20 game.
The only thing I ever believed in the Bible was John 11:35.

The last major gaming related purchase I made was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle & Other Strangeness, Revised and all of the supplements for the game.  Picked up the main book through Noble Knight for about $25, and got all the supplements at a local gaming store that hasn't updated it's stock in ten years at slightly below cover price (about $7/book).  All said and done, it was about $100.  I loved running TMNT back in high school, but had lost all the books.

It wasn't a spur-of-the-moment purchase -- I'd been thinking about it for months -- and I'm quite happy with the game, though I'd be happier if I could actually be playing it.  I'd love to run it again, but I need to find a new group of players.  My current group has effectively disbanded, which makes me sad.

Oh, I also picked up Ninja & Superspies and Beyond the Supernatural, mostly to use as supplements in TMNT.

Run a session at a local game day or con. Or one of the bigger ones. I think you'll be surprised at how many people show up. Just a guess. I was.

TMNT is the first roleplaying game I ever played. I got my parents to buy it for me when I was 8 because it was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles product. I thought it was a comic prior to purchase. It's an awesome game.

It WAS a comic book at first . Mostly aimed at adults and done in black & White - before the creator was encouraged to make a kid-friendly version.

I'm downloading the fragmentary chapters of the Magic Burner already. To be honest, I play in an incredibly fiddly variant of Iron Heroes already, so I'm not too scared by Burning Wheel's complexity in combat. The main problem would be only having one copy of the books, so I'm hoping pdfs are available somewhere.

No, I mean I thought TMNT and Other Strangness, the volume, was a comic book.
