Title: What's The Last RPG-Related Purchase You've Made?
Post by: Zachary The First on August 28, 2007, 11:27:03 PM
....When was it?

....Was it a spur-of-the-moment purchase, or something you'd been considering for a while?

....And are you happy with it?

(As a spinoff of this here thread (http://www.therpgsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7297))

For me, it was my Castles & Crusades GM Screen at Gen Con.  And it was autographed by Gygax, so hell yes.

All Tomorrow's Zombies  - I've been waiting for it for some time.  Haven't used it yet, but I'm pleased with it.  It complements the rest of my UniSystem collection quite nicely.

50 Fathoms - I was humming and hawing about getting the PDF version, but I saw it on the shelf at The Sentry Box in Calgary and picked it up (along with ATZ above).  What a fantastic product.  I really wish more campaigns were released in a similar format; it's leagues better than Evernight as well.  I'll be getting some use out of it soon (very hopefully).

Almost went and bought the Eberron Player's Guide today.  I'm playing in a new campaign starting "real soon now!"(tm) and I thought that more background info might be nice.  But the GM has laid out an explcit "core rules only" guideline and the setting ha a few changes from canon (nothing major, but who knows where it will be going).  So I figure it might be of limited value to me and left it on the shelf.

My latest snag off of eBay was a copy of Run out the Guns.

Haven't received it yet, so I don't know if I'll be happy with it or not. I've been interested in pirates/swashbuckler/early modern games for a long time, so when I saw mention of this one on rpgnet, and came across some really enthusiastic grass-roots web pages devoted to the game, I added it to my watch list.

Oh, wait, the other day I was in Endgame and I grabbed a few used games...Prince Valiant for $1, how can pass that up, even though I already have a copy signed by Greg Stafford? Also, Puppetland (which I gave to a friend who I thought might like it) and Pantheon, each at $3.

My other recent "major" purchase was WFRP 1e, again off of eBay, for a song. I haven't read all the way through but I'm pretty pleased with it having never gotten into the game before.

GURPS:MARTIAL ARTS at GenCon. Why ? You're kidding right? Its GURPS for 4th edition . Big Dopey me wants it.

GURPS:SUPERS POD - also at Gencon. Its Superheroes. ITS GURPS . See above comment/explanation.  (SJG really should sell paperbound books again)

BATTLEFIELD EVOLUTION miniatures. Specifically the USMC Force Recon squad , I plan to use these with my GURPS:TRAVELLER campaign as the mercenaries that the PCs keep hiring. If you remember certain threads I used to have on the Orange and Fluffy you'll know what mercenaries I mean.

PAIZO Big Map foldout Tavern.  Its BIG, Its a well-made map.....and in 25mm scale. I know I'll use it someday . Whether its GURPS:FANTASY/BANESTORM or one of the rare times I run D20 - I'll use the thing.

Sooo weighty in my hands, like little player-killing dwarf-stars.

Well, I paid for a copy of the World Builder's Guidebook on eBay, which I'd been wanting for years, but unfortunately, the seller has failed to actually get me the damn book, and now ignores all communication.

Before that, it would be Gamma World 4th.

Some stuff at Gen Con.  I'm not sure which was the last, though I think it may have been a set of 7 Gamescience dice...

If dice don't count, I think it would be Savage Worlds Explorer's Edition, also at Gen Con.

I just got a copy of Faith Conquers to learn more about this Burning Empires thingamabob I picked up, too.  Damn fine read, but not really an RPG.

That would have been GenCon where I picked up:

City of Brass by Necromancer Games
Hollow Earth Expedition by Exile Studios
The four Spycraft 1.0 books I didn't own yet, dirt cheap at the Titan booth.
Some magnetic counter bases by Alea Games
A set of Fudge dice to play fate with.

And that's about it. It was a light GenCon for me.

Most of my GenCon purchases were comic books actually, but I did go out and get After the Bomb since Palladium no longer prints the old TMNT book (mine has gone missing long ago).  Also nabbed a copy of Mutants Down Under.  I love that fucking cover.  That is one hard deck fucking Koala.

I am a little over excited about the purchase since TMNT/After the Bomb was my introduction to RPGs back in the day and I always wanted to nix the Palladium rules and tack on something else to Wujik's Bio-E stuff.

No purchases, as of yet, but I did get two games as gifts. Both were rather odd choices:

Artesia - I just skimmed through it. A lot of work obviously went into it. I will probably never play it.

L5R - it's interesting. I have yet to get into the guts of the thing but I might be able to do something with it.

Savage Worlds Explorers Edition, and before that -
Star Wars Saga Edition

I've recently picked up a few PDF products, including 50 Fathoms and Inspectres. While a well-bookmarked PDF is great for reference, I really have a hard time getting into them. I can't sit down and read or browse a PDF in any sort of enjoyable manner. With the print version, even if I never run the game, I can often spend a little time just flipping through pages and reading bits here and there.

Welcome, Forager.

In preparation for a campaign, I've snapped up a bunch of Moldvay/Cook B/X D&D books.  I now have enough to give a copy of each to everyone who might be playing.

In addition, I just scored a 1e Gamma World box off of eBay and am waiting for that to be delivered.

Oh, and it's back to school time, so I got a bunch of notebooks and mapping/drawing supplies from Staples for my game prep.

EDIT: Judges Guild pdfs from RPGnow or whatever it's called now, too, using up an AMEX gift card left over from my birthday.

The following Redbrick Earthdawn books:

Earthdawn Player's Compendium
Earthdawn Gamemaster's Compendium
Nations of Barsaive

I made the purchase after a thorough research of the game, including downloading samples of the core books and searching the RPGnet archives for opinions about Earthdawn.

Nevertheless, I'm pretty disappointed. The Earthdawn system is far more complex and crunchy than I was led to believe by comments about it being 'rules-medium'. And the setting material is almost all fluff - page on page of historical background and politics. There's fuck all concrete content for running an actual gaming session - no lairs, wilderness encounters, maps of kaers - just hundreds of pages describing factions, economics, and history.

I suppose you're supposed to use that stuff to inspire you to write actual game material. But I'm pretty choked that with over 1,200 pages of book I'll still have to make up any actual playable adventures almost from scratch - and that's if I can get my players to read hundreds of pages of character generation and background; the Player's Compendium recommend players read all the material on adepts (classes), races, and skills before playing. That's over 200 pages.

I got a ton of stuff at GenCon

RPG Stuff:
GURPS Who's Who 1
GURPS Who's Who 2
GURPS Shapeshifters
All Tomorrow's Zombies
Changeling: The Lost
Monster's and Treasure 2nd printing (C&C)
Crusader Magazines (5, 6, 7)
Grey Ranks
The Shab-al-Hiri Roach
The Roach Returns (for above)
Starship Troopers Pocket Players Guide
Og: Unearthed Edition

Games:
Hex Hex
Illuminati: SubGenius Edition
Vampire: Dark Influences (this one's a real deal for all the shit in the box...)
CoverUp
Wallamoppi

I also got a novel from a new writer (Shane Moore), titled A Prisoner's Welcome.

Now, none of this counts the goodie bag stuff, which was pretty extensive.  I think that's everything.

That's over 200 pages.

That's pretty much how Earthdawn is...  It's a thoroughly 90's game...  Almost every book released for it was complete fluff, with maybe 4-5 pages of rules stuck at the end.  I think it's pretty unreasonable to expect players to actually read that much information.

Don't get me wrong - I love Earthdawn - but the supplements had a very poor crunch:fluff ratio.  It's a system that beautifully ties in with its setting, but the setting is almost crushingly detailed.  Most of the supplements were basically $20 collections of short stories.

There were a few adventures released for 1e.  The first one - Mists of Betrayal - had very poor balance combined with a completely railroady plot.  However, there's good stuff in there, too, if you can work it out.  Shattered Pattern was a pretty good module, OTOH.  Infected was (imho) pretty outstanding with the right group, though fairly complex to run.

I've been looking at the Red Brick Earthdawn and would be interested in finding out how it's similar to or different from 1e.  Do you have any insight on that?

No, this is my first experience with Earthdawn.

Thanks for the insight.

I should point out the books are very well written, formatted, and illustrated. They compile most of the material from earlier editions into huge indexed tomes. There are adventure hooks throughout. For a particular kind of gamer (or reader) this is quality stuff.

But the adventures are almost all political (find out why the Tashja trading compact isn't fulfilling its treaty obligations to the Pradu of Greater Volmia, etc.). For a game that has so much mechanical support for combat, and is chock full of interesting monsters and magic artifacts, it's bizarre that virtually none of the setting material or adventure hooks involve killing monsters and taking their stuff.

And there's just so much material - like seven pages of historical and cultural background on each class, with rituals and short stories, etc. piled on and on. It comes across as a game that's meant to be read rather than played, which is a shame because there's the skeleton of a clever game in there, larded with enormous amounts of non-game content.

There is that.  As I mentioned, it's pretty thoroughly a 90's game, and much of mainstream gaming was moving away from that mindset. :)  The mechanics and crunchy bits are in ED are a lot of fun.  Heck, it's even got reasons for dungeons built into the game.  I think the fact that it didn't concentrate on exploration & discovery is a function of its era...  Seriously, it could have had some incredible dungeon crawls had the designers spent the time doing so.

I completely agree with that, too.  Although I love the Denizens of Earthdawn books, they frankly needed more mechanics and less... writing.

I bought the new mini Savage Worlds at GenCon for $10.

Then my wife accidentally* threw it into the swag bag for the booth, so some lucky %&(# who volunteered at the booth is now walking around with the only RPG product I've bought in the last year.

*Well, she threw it in on purpose, but didn't know it was mine.

Kind of an impulse buy, but I'm not displeased with it.  It sure beats some other (http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Scoundrel-Trickery-Ingenuity-Roleplaying/dp/0786941529) purchases (http://www.amazon.com/Expedition-Undermountain-Dungeons-Roleplaying-Adventure/dp/078694157X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-5003647-3490322?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188513409&sr=1-1) I've made recently.

I just picked up a couple dozen d12s.

I was going to buy a copy of the D&D basic set (not the red-box set, but this one (http://www.lyberty.com/encyc/articles/images/dnd_BasicRule_s.jpg)); however, I got sidetracked and the store closed. Next time I get a chance, I'm going to pick it up. And run it.

Well, it very much emulates it in style, I think, the sort of sessions/campaigns it works for--light, often a bit zany, down to creating your "Franchise" and building it up.  In many ways, I consider it a spiritual heir of sorts to that fine game.

It's Ghostbusters meets Reno 911.  It emulates a ghost-hunting franchise and a reality show about that ghost-hunting franchise.  It doesn't really have to be ghosts, it can be any kind of horror you want.  The game is designed to be silly and is really fucking awesome for that.

I'm an hour and a half drive from the FLGS so I only make the trip every few months, but when I do I try to make it worth my while:

- Ars Magica's Order of Hermes: True Lineages
- The Excellent Prisimatic Spray vol.1 Issues 4&5 (the Dying Earth RPG magazine)
- City of Brass
- Changeling: The Lost
- Dungeon Crawl Classics #40-something, the Treasure Maps one
- Fear Itself, the new GUMSHOE investigative horror game by Robin Laws

My most recent purchase was a PDF copy of the old D&D module B4: The Lost City.  I have a hardcopy of it somewhere, but I recently moved and it is boxed up somewhere in that warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I got an idea to convert it using the ZeFRS RPG system so I had to have it in my hot little hands without the hassle of digging through storage.  The Internet is a wonderful tool of instant gratification.  :D

Recently I've picked up:

Dread: The First Book of Pandemonium (new edition) - Very good reworking of the original.  Very happy with this so far.  (Original backstory gone.)

Spirit of the Century -very impressed, I'm hoping it will save a game that has gone onto hiatus due to a lack of appropriate mechanics.

Armageddon - on clearance at local FLGS, looking for a flavor of Classic Unisystem that can handle a high-power fantasy rpg.  This is also looking good.

Conspiracy X 2nd edition - cause it looks cool, and I wanted a good basic Classic Unisystem set of rules (this was before my Armageddon purchase).

Vampire: The Requiem - for a game I'm playing in (found excellent copy at Half-Price Books that was marked at $7.99 for some reason).

Stuff! for EABA - Great supplement for building things (from weapons to vehicles to gadgets to creatures to civilizations).  Finally got a hardcopy a few months back.

Good move. ZeFRS is great for running old-style D&D adventures. I've had a conversion of B10- Night's Dark Terror on the back burner for a few months now, and really should get back to it.

One piece of advice though. Freshly made characters using the RAW can be extremely fragile, so you may want to look at awarding a sizable number of bonus points from the get-go. Other than that minor quibble it's an amazingly smooth system that emulates the S&S genre admirably.

Quote from: obrynThere is that.

Although I love the Denizens of Earthdawn books, they frankly needed more mechanics and less... writing.

-O
We had a really successful and fun ED campaign back during the day but...
I couldn't agree more. I have a bunch of stuff from ED 1e. At first, I loved all the setting stuff, and the fact that, as you say, the dungeon rationale was built right into the game. Unfortunately, I found the setting stuff to be way overdone, and a bit stifling. The combat system is loads of fun to play, though, once you get used to the funky dice and what not.
At one point, I considered creating a home brew with it, but it's hard to envision you're own world with it's own feel when Barsaive is being crammed down your throat in virtually every sentence of every section of each book. Creatures of Barsaive is a good example of this problem: 118 pages long, with only 50 creatures to show for it. The rest of the space is taken up by some nice art, and some not so nice, long winded  semi-cutesy descriptions of each monster from the POV of a dragon.  Each creature could have easily been presented in 25% of the space- and still had plenty of room fro illos and fluff.
Eventually, as a campaign ending act of vengence against FASA, I destroyed Barsaive and moved on to another game.

Thanks for the advice, Drew!  I have already come across that problem when setting up some initial games with my friends.  The stock enemies and foes from the old Conan RPG can kick the ass of pretty much any starting character, so I had to tone them down a bit.  A fellow on the ZeFRS forum with the handle of Artikid has produced a neat beastiary that has a good mix of opponents, many of which are quite suitable for challenging beginning characters.

In any case, if your interested in checking out my conversion for The Lost City, you can find the first four levels here:

Nice. I really like what you've done with the module, and am looking forward to seeing your take on Zargon. I always thought he was one of the more interesting and evocative examples of monstrous villains from the old days.

I also enjoy the ease with which the old B/X D&D modules can be converted to an setting S&S when stripped of their pseudo-medieval set dressing. B10 for instance is an ongoing struggle against slavers through petrified forests and ruined cities, culminating in a race to an abandoned temple in a valley of ancient, jackal-headed men. There's even a cthulhoid entity squatting at the centre of the final encounter. Just change the names on the maps, replace the Tolkienesque critters with something more appropriate and you're good to go. The cool thing about doing it with Zefrs is that you can stat monsters in seconds.

Excellent stuff.

Man, do I ever want to try InSpectres. Or the original Ghostbusters for that matter.

So mine are:

Dungeon Tiles: Ruins of the Wild and Hidden Crypts. These were total impulse buys from my local game store, on separate trips. The $10 price tag makes it easy to go "Oooh, new Dungeon Tiles? Gimme!" And I love them, they're so pretty. Now I just need to get my D&D game going again (on hold for a honeymoon and choir tour) so I can use them!

Shadow of Yesterday Hardcover from Lulu. This was a considered purchase; I even sprung for the hardcover because I dig the James West art. I want to try it so bad it hurts. I've shown it around to several gaming buddies (with pretty favorable response) and I hope to play soon.

A buncha packs of Star Wars Pocketmodels. Also impulse buys from the game store and comic shop. I've got the Millenium Falcon!

Peace,
-Joel

You died for science!

QuoteThese dice are the most precise RPG dice you can add to your collection. Gamescience states that “no company makes polyhedral dice closer to casino specifications” (casino dice must be exact to a tolerance of .005” - Gamescience dice have been measured with a side to side variation of .002” to .006”). In short, these are the dice you want if you demand the fairest, most impartial role available to gamers. The precision edge both keep these dice truly random since there is no unfairness introduced from curvature variation and also allows for better stopping power so the dice come to a halt faster than other dice.

GameScience dice are the shit, and Col. Lou Zocchi is a blast to talk to.  At Gen Con, ask him to show his physical comparisons between the various brands of dice.

My favorite dice in the entire world are my GameScience Pewter Percentiles, which I believe I have mentioned before.  The "Tablewreckers" are rightly feared by my gaming group.  Rough.  Mean.  Heavy.  The dice of a Barbarian Warlord.

Yeah - I've met Lou Zocchi in person.
VERY entertaining guy.

He's like an interesting blended mix of P.T. Barnum and W.C. Fields.

That homemade D20 comparison chart he has ?
One of the sneakiest things I did was say this to a kid ..

KID :  "whats that chart all about?"
Me/Ed C. : "why don't you ask him...he'll tell you...."
Kid walks over ...asks..

KID: "Whats that chart about ?"

LOU ZOCCHI : " Well let me explain it to you..."

Poor kid is now trapped for the next 20 minutes while Lou eloquently and charismatically explains why his dice are the best made dice on the planet and truly roll random ...unlike those other dice...and I'll tell you why , my boy....

I'm such a bastard....

One of the best shows at either ORIGINS or GenCon.

On a side note, It's like having writer's block. I'm hankering to GM some, and want to startup a new adventure or campaign, but can't decide what to write up. Should it be?:

4) A Pirates of the Caribbean style d20 Adventure.
5) A Low Level Eberron Adventure?
6) A Traveller Classic Adventure in the periphery of the Empire
7) A FUDGE rules Indiana Jones Pulp Adventure
8) An Eternal Rome d20 adventure set in Roman Britain

and there are 3 or 4 other games under consideration as well, however they are less desireable than those listed above. What sounds good?

I picked up the SW Explorers Guide, for all the same great reasons everyone else has.

GURPS Martial Arts. I just couldn't see how I could be without it. More of an impulse buy, though, since I'm not actively running a GURPS game at the moment.

I passed on Aces & Eights--because I'm going to cajole my friend into getting it, and I'll go for the forthcoming softcover when he decides to run a campaign--in favor of ordering a copy of Metal, Magic, and Lore, for the old-school. I'm looking forward to thoroughly checking that one out. My friend Rob brought this one back from GenCon. He showed it around and people started asking me about it because it looked like my kinda thing. So I guess I'm the victim of some sort of viral word-of-mouth conspiracy on that one. Hopefully, mine will get here soon and I'll start a winter campaign in November, after the October Cthulhu insanity.

My last two RPG related purchases were a $0.01 copy of Lords of Madness - sure it's 3.5, but it's fluff for some of my favorite monsters and it cost a PENNY - and jrient's Mekton Zeta eBay auction. :D

Oh, I intend to. Ever since my sole experience with a LGS 'game day' (back in '00) resulted in someone walking off with my ATM, I've been hunting for one. Amazon once ordered me one, then three months later admitted they couldn't find one and refunded me. SO glad I found that auction.

Thanks again, and looking forward to their arrival!

Now that's just fucking brilliant - well played, sir!

My last RPG related purchases were domain names and server space to create a gaming forum - //www.d20haven.com. (though the focus is d20-based gaming, it's got places to talk about all kinds of gaming!)

Before that, it was three D&D books - Tome of Battle: The Book of Nine Swords, Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk, and Magic Item Compendium.  I'm getting my 3.5 library filled out before it goes away.

Now J Arcane has me thinking about Wilderlands....

I just nabbed "Damnation City" for Vampire the Requiem. This shit should have been out 15 years ago for Vampire the Masquerade. I've been gaming for 22 years, so I can make a believable city for my Vampire game, but this book has some nice shortcuts and a lot of great ideas I hadn't really put much thought into previously. Right now it's me second favorite nWoD book (right behind Second Sight) and probably my fifth favorite RPG book I own. It's not a book you read for fun though -  like most of the ST-related nWoD books it's meant as a toolbox for an ST to build his or her game with. But it's awesome. And it's thicker than the Vampire book itself, so w00t. I think it's a great value.

That sounds really good - I passed on a copy a while back, didn't know it was that big. I've already settled on running the real-world city for my Requiem games (Vancouver B.C., just across the water and home to an estimated 5000 hardcore addicts on the downtown east side) and having a book of tips would be excellent. Thanks for the heads up on it.

Thanks to some recent company related windshield time, I got to breeze by a gaming store near my ol' alma mater.

There, I picked up the Romulan boxed set from Last Unicorn (complete with a LUG catalog from '99 too; what could have been...), and the two large boxed sets from West End for their Star Wars game, wha, the Lords of the Expanse and the Darkstryder thingy.

Both WEG sets were rough on the outside, but pure complete and in great condition on the inside (minus some highlighting in one book).

I look forward to snatching up some more neato used stuff from there in the future while the youngins there flounce about with their Magic cards and WoW.

Hackmaster GMs Guide and Players Handbook (great reading, this is real old school d&d)

Two books for Vampire the Requiem: Ordo Dracul and Invictus. Both of them get a resounding thumbs up from me. When the VtR book came out I really was uninspired by the Covenants. They were cool, but they seemed like they were just throwbacks to the Vampire the Masquerade Clans in too many ways. The Covenant sourcebooks really dispel those myths and give the Covenants meat. Lancea Sanctum is next on my list.

GURPS Martial Arts.

I love how they took the idea of 'Martial Art' to mean much more than just eastern martial arts and ran away with it. The cinematic parts should be very useful if I can ever convince my players to do TMNT.

GURPS Spaceships PDF.

Has abstract (non hex based, no minis/counters) starship combat... I've gotta build some ships and try it.

Magical Traditions for Mage:the Awakening  -- Neat for many reasons, but these may be less obvious.

1) New ways to envision magic

2) New possibilities for character creations of mages

3) It has some nifty philosophical ideas that you might be able to use as a ST to mess with the poor players' heads (in a fun, interesting way)!

If you like dark gritty fantasy, yes, absolutely. And of course if you like military fiction it is very much of that.

I have a friend that really only reads military fiction. He's an old Marine, the only fantasy that I know he reads is 'Black Company'.

The series in a way feels kind of 'Noir' too. I can't really put my finger on it.

Quote from: Christmas ApeWhile I must congratulate you on Reign, my understanding is Renegade Crowns is nine kinds of win.

It depends on what you're looking for. Some of the WFRP community was a bit bummed that there wasn't much about the Border Princes in the book. It's basically one giant tool box to make your own Princedoms, thus putting it all in your hands. Me? I firkin' love the book. It's nice having a part of the Old World that I can build myself, to put my own touches on, and create my own histories for, yet still have it be the Old World. And let's face it, rolling dice on random charts is fun, and they set it up so that you can either choose what you want or roll up an entire area. I've made some cool Princedoms, ones that looked wonky at first (they're random charts, after all) but managed to work in the end.

So yea, I think Renegade Crowns is awesome. Other peoples' MMV.

I just got my hands on:

Fading Suns, 1e

Twilight 2000 Boxed Set

Lejendary Journies (which I'm still very iffy on)

Well, you've touched on exactly what appeals to me about Renegade Crowns, so I'd say I'm with you on that one.

I've been in a bit of a buying hiatus recently, having slaked most of my major lusts prior to a busy pre-Winter Purchase Holiday run of birthdays, so the only thing I snagged recently was Lords of Madness, which cost $10 with $9.99 in shipping. :D I really, really like aboleths, grells, and mind flayers anyway, and the tsochar are by far my favorite monster new to 3e. I'd get it for any D&D game I intended to run. I'm an aberration kind of guy...must be all the Lovecraft I read as a young gamer.

I keep meaning to get it together and get Art of the Duel and Emerald Empire off Amazon (they don't take PayPal, so I need a friend's card, but we work opposite shifts so I rarely see him, etc.), but now I might just wait for Masters of War.

The Palladium Christmas Grab Bag. I got:
RIFTS Game Master Guide
RIFTS Book of Magic
New West
Nightbane RPG
and in addition to the grab bag I ordered
Chaos Earth

Shipping costs were insane but the strength of the Euro helped to ease the pain.

I just ordered Byzantium Secundus and the Player's Companion for Fading Suns used off Amazon. Why hadn't I heard of this system sooner I don't know, but it's everything I want in my sci-fi. It's got the cooler aspects of Warhammer 40K without the stupid shit and fanboy placation, touches of Dune and Aliens, and all wrapped up in an interesting history. Now to see if the system breaks or not...

I think the 2nd ed of Star Wars D6 was a little more detailed, but it was also very similar to the first edition (if memory serves).  D6 Star Wars was a lot of fun to play, as I recall.  I think you got to play more races in the 2nd (just wookie, ewok, human mostly in the 1st ed).

I have been a whirling dervish of pdf consumption!

Check it out:

Blood Games II
Haven't had a chance to read this cover to cover but it is awesome so far.  Layout has some things I don't care for (I would have preferred standard two column) but I like the system from what I've read, the writing is very good (I even enjoyed the short story running throughout).  I would probably ignore a lot of the nonhuman and magic rules for PCs and just run those rules as NPC stuff.  It is a lot of fun to read about that stuff though.  Great job Clash!

Starcluster 2
I liked BGII so much I went and bought this next.  I would say my comments on BGII apply to this game as well, though I personally prefer the layout in this game (though this is perhaps balanced out by the fact that I prefer horror to scifi).

Blood!
This is a game that I haven't read much about (though there is one review here for it).  It's meant to play out games in the splatter horror genre, as seen in horror films from the 70s and early 80s.  It's basically very similar to the BRP rules from Call of Cthulhu.  The major addition: a more complicated combat system.  You track health, energy, and blood loss.  It has action points which allow you to save actions to interrupt other characters if you win initiative.  Most importantly, there is a critical hit system which involves a billion charts, one for each kind of weapon (there is both an acid splash critical table and a total immersion in acid critical table, so don't worry!) and they are very explicit.  Just like the movies, so awesome!  The layout is pretty decent with some really gory illustrations but some awkward writing and plenty of typos.

Donjon
Okay, this is pretty much a hippy forge game.  It is somewhere between I dunno Tunnels & Trolls and Dungeons & Dragons in complexity.  The forgey part is successes allow players to state facts about the situation, but the GM is told to act like an evil genie and twist these facts around to the detriment of the players.  I dunno how this would play out.  It's like it wants to be one of those "the gm is just another player and can't handle responsibility so it must be shared" games, and yet it also wants to be a "GM cannot let the players win at any cost!!" game.  Kinda weird, but very nice layout.

Cyberpunk 2020
Ok, I never played this game and I never got into Cyberpunk either.  But I read Neuromancer recently and liked it, and have always liked Blade Runner, so there you go.  It was always something I wanted to play.  I read Dr Rotwang!'s review on rpg.net (great review btw!) and am downloading it now.

Best version in my opinion.

I also got a used copy of Swashbuckler on ebay. Cool system for dueling, but I don't like using cards. You need to already understand the setting/style, however, so newbies to swashbuckling pirates will have problems.

Pre painted Reaper Skeletons. All the store had to offer.

They basically cost me some peanuts and marbles, as the $ to € ratio is very supportive at the moment.

EDIT: This also was a great example of free market at work. I entered the store with the inclination to buy a D&D Minis booster, because the Gelatinous Cube MUST BE MINE.

Instead I bought a Battalion of those Skeletal Guys for the same money.

Hollow Earth Expedition- nice ideas, but not psyched about it (from the look of it I expected a two-fisted pulp game and got a gritty survival-game, where it is very easy for you to bite the dust- also the published demo adventures are railroading nightmares). Mechanically its a halfway decent system, but it doesn't do anything Savage Worlds doesn't for me.

Savage Worlds- Explorers Edition- even though I already own the core book, for $9.99 you can't go wrong.

Reign (Solis Hardcover)- Beautiful, just beautiful. Can't wait to run that.

Solomon Kane- Another really nice book. ;) (hopefully I will find time to read it throughly soon, but what I gleaned from other people and from thumbing through it sounds really sweet)

Castle Whiterock from Goodman games arrived yesterday. It's frickin' huge: four thick dungeon books, a regional gazetter, book of player handouts, pre-generated PCs, book of indexed NPCs and items, foldout map of the nearby city, and a thick book of dungeon maps.

After reading through some of the material, I'm pleased to see that Whiterock has high quality as well as quantity. Lots of intriguing adventure hooks in the nearby town, and lots of ways to draw PCs into the dungeon itself for specific missions. So far, it looks like a mega-dungeon done right.

I won Burning Wheel Revised, Monster Burner, and Blossoms Are Falling off Ebay this week, all for a very good price.

This is a game I've bought and tried to get into two times already.  I thought I'd give it another go so I went looking on Ebay and there it was.  I love the production values and layout and I like a lot of the concepts behind it.

I get stuck on the contrasting rules detail; you have some hand-wavey abstract stuff like a wealth mechanic and the bizarre abstract range system, but then you have all this book keeping on top of it where you have multiple kinds of experience.  And then you have the combat and argument systems that almost play like non-collectable mini card games.  I need to sit down and play out some examples to see how the rules are in play.

I placed a bunch of other orders for Japanese games and it's all starting to come in now.

I got the Shin Megami Tensei Mato Tokyo 200X rulebook.  This is based on the video games of the same name, specifically on the first two games.  It's basically an occult cyperpunk game (or a post apocalyptic occult cyberpunk game if you are playing in the background of the second game).  It's a very traditional game, including classes, exp points, dropped items and money and a huge list of monsters with stat blocks that include charts for randomly determining which attack is used.  You could almost play it solo!  It's basically a percentile system.  The big thing about the video games is that you could communicate with monsters and depending upon their alignment and personality you could convince them to join or ignore you if you say/offer the right things.  Then you can combine them with other monsters to make new ones.  That system is brought over in the pen and paper game.

I got Yuuyake Koyake and Mononoko Koyake.  These are two games I would probably never play but wanted them because they are gorgeous books and would be fun to read.  You play as an animal spirit that can take human form.  You basically have to go around and solve problems for people.  There's not any fighting in it at all.  It's also diceless and you gain power by helping people out, improving connections with NPCs and the other players.  You then spend that power to make things happen with whatever skills/powers you've chosen based on your animal form.

Finally, Meikyuu Kingdom Kingdom Book and Meikyuu Kingdom Dungeon Book came today.  This is a really difficult game to wrap my head around.  It has some traditional aspects: you choose a class, you can fight random enemies in dungeons, etc.  However, it's almost like a board game mixed with a tactical game mixed with a kingdom sim mixed with an RPG.  Adventures have a dungeon phase and a kingdom phase.  Each player controls one character, but they all also control a single kingdom.  They can use the resources they gain in the dungeon to build up their kingdom.  Dungeons are mapped by a GM using a standard sheet included with the game.  It's basically a sheet with a bunch of rooms drawn on it and you determine what is in each room and then decide how they connect.  Combat also takes place on a special sheet, which is a little tactical abstract board.

All skills, facilities, items, monsters, and traps are drawn on little cards printed in the rule book you can photocopy.  On the card are all the stats and a description and an illustration.  So it's also got some (non random) card game aspect to it.  Expansions include more cards, and you can also go out and just buy cards in sets.  So it's sort of collectible but again not random.

It seems pretty fascinating but because it's not really traditional it's a lot harder for me to read than, say, the Shin Megami Tensei game.

It's like watching Wayne step up for one last gunfight in The Shootist, or Eastwood's liquour-fueled killing spree at the end of Unforgiven...the traditional RPG saddling up for one last ride into the sunset...

I bought two reaper miniatures, a cleric and a pirate.

The cleric has a mace and shield, but the chainmail hood is what sold me. Likewise the pirate has a nice cloak sword etc... but a parrot perched on the shoulder? Sold!

My long term goal is to get these bad boys painted up in time for 4th edition.

Chainmail hoods are the shit. Funny, though, that they only seem suitable for clerics.

Buffy Revised Core Rulebook
Angel Core Rulebook
Buffy GM Screen
Angel GM Screen
Monster Smackdown limited edition
Slayer's Handbook limited Edition
Lord of the Rings Core Rulebook 2nd printing
The Two Towers Sourcebook
The Fellowship of the Ring Sourcebook
Moria
Total for above books (all like new) = $30

Dark Heresy (like new except for some tiny damage to the upper spine) = $10

I found them in a hole in the wall used bookstore, and my old habits of snarfing stuff like that kicked in.

The kicker to the story is they had the Dark Heresy GM screen too, but they had it priced at $20, so I didn't get it.

The other trick is to remember that the players are responsible for the rules too. Offload. And once you are past the short curve it is fast, especially for the amount of "crunch" it has. DoW melds with the "roleplaying", and before long you'll find yourself rarely talking about the dice at all, just rolling. (Ironically the combat tends to sound that way too, "roleplay". Assuming you write dark enough/large enough for the other players to read your actions. ) Just like any game I suppose.

Just to catch you guys up, I've bought these few things in the last months:

Castles & Crusades: PH and M&T. It really is like a new editionof the old AD&D...if that makes any sense. It's even got the same writing style as EGG himself.

The Palladium RPG: I got it for cheap, used and along with Mystic China. It's missing page 51, which seems to be the back end of the equipment list.

Gurps: Characters: Imagine my dissapointment when I found out this is an incomplete book. Not in the missing a page way like above, but it requires you also own campaigns to be able to understand it. I thought this would be like a players guide, but it doesn't have ANY of the game rules in it, only the info for character creation. Oh well, campaigns is on the way, so is powers.

BW is way easier IMO since you don't have all the maneuver and scene rules, although there is a bit more fiddly bits in the DoW and combat. There are a lot of sections you can skip with BW. For example I've played entire campaigns without using Fight!, just using Bloody Versus or just bog Versus. Once you have the Hub and Spokes going, start with Duel of Wits. Faith anytime is fine. Then Range & Cover. Add Sorcery and Fight! last, as they seem appropriate. Fight! is by far the most fiddly bits section, and usually takes the most to get your head around.

EDIT: One quirk is that since BE was written after a number of years of BW being out there and lots and lots of play under the belt BE has a few refinements that are immediately portable back to BW. Such as the rules for how to run a 3-way DoW. BW doesn't really cover that, and it's not something that comes up that often, but that's where I go when it does.

P.S.  I personally have been trying out a new tact for combat in a Burning THAC0 game. Sort of a "say it, roll it" version of Fight!/Range & Cover to give a somewhat coarser granularity feel than true Fight! but finer than straight Versus. But I'm a bit off the map as far as the rules as written go with that, and am just feeling my way now. I wouldn't recommend it till you've got the game proper down. I'm also not entirely happen setting aside the scripting. I'm definitely heading back to scripting within a short order.

The last major gaming related purchase I made was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle & Other Strangeness, Revised and all of the supplements for the game.  Picked up the main book through Noble Knight for about $25, and got all the supplements at a local gaming store that hasn't updated it's stock in ten years at slightly below cover price (about $7/book).  All said and done, it was about $100.  I loved running TMNT back in high school, but had lost all the books.

It wasn't a spur-of-the-moment purchase -- I'd been thinking about it for months -- and I'm quite happy with the game, though I'd be happier if I could actually be playing it.  I'd love to run it again, but I need to find a new group of players.  My current group has effectively disbanded, which makes me sad.

Oh, I also picked up Ninja & Superspies and Beyond the Supernatural, mostly to use as supplements in TMNT.

I'm downloading the fragmentary chapters of the Magic Burner already. To be honest, I play in an incredibly fiddly variant of Iron Heroes already, so I'm not too scared by Burning Wheel's complexity in combat. The main problem would be only having one copy of the books, so I'm hoping pdfs are available somewhere.

You can buy the PDFs for the Lifepaths to help with character creation. But they are $7 per race, IIRC.  I just said screw it and bought a second set of books for $26 or whatever. Most people I've played with get their own shortly anyway. Generally speaking you are creating the characters when all together anyway. If you've got a wifi laptop at the table or are doing this from home a guy named Paul Drussel is building an online character builder (( http://www.drussel.net/charburner/charburner.html )). You need the Character Burner book though to get in, username is page 73 of the Character Burner, 15 rows up, 1st word, password is the two hyphenated names following that (including the hyphen).

I know I would like to have a PDF version of the rules. I've got one for Burning Empires and it's great. But I've had that discussion with Luke, and it ain't happening till BWR isn't being printed anymore. Given that last I heard BWR sales rate is still on the increase that's not going to happen in the foreseeable future. :(

You'll probably want to run The Sword demo first. If someone plays the Roden (ratman) that race is in the Monster Burner but the book isn't critical since any of his Traits not found in the Character Burner are statless Char traits. That demo is good because it gives sort of an idea of what the possibilities are for the game, and you can get a handle on the mechanics without creating characters, even if you don't ever take your own game to that extreme of player character centric driven action.

Then figure out what you want to do for a setting. The BW board, especially the Spark forum is a huge resource for help with invoking the setting you want.

P.S. Burning Wheel's character gen is a lot of work for a full PC character. Part of it is the fiddly bits of the system and the other part is you are laying the foundation for the campaign right in the characters. So try not to freak out if you spend a full session on the "characters", if you plan to play for a large number of sessions. Because what you really are doing is hashing the point and tone of the campaign. I can, and have, run a pickup session with complete noobs (they'd never openned the book before) with zero prep work and zero prior notice. We were off and playing in under 10 minutes. But they selected out of the prefab example characters at the back of the BWR book, changing 1 Belief for each of them.

I do have to note that I found a copy of the GURPS Traveller 25th anniversary limited edition. Signed by Loren Wiseman, Steve Jackson, and Marc Miller. 110 out of 610.

I'm not generally a collector but the price was super low for any rpg book and I figured it was a no brainer.

Only now do I realize that at that store I must have over looked that book for months and months.

Am I a fanboy?

Lore of the Forsaken and Blood of the Wolf for $1.20 something each and $4.00 shipping total. Since I'd like to run Werewolf: the Forsaken sometime in the far future I figured it was a worthwhile investment.
