This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: HaffrungBut the adventures are almost all political (find out why the Tashja trading compact isn't fulfilling its treaty obligations to the Pradu of Greater Volmia, etc.). For a game that has so much mechanical support for combat, and is chock full of interesting monsters and magic artifacts, it's bizarre that virtually none of the setting material or adventure hooks involve killing monsters and taking their stuff.
There is that.  As I mentioned, it's pretty thoroughly a 90's game, and much of mainstream gaming was moving away from that mindset. :)  The mechanics and crunchy bits are in ED are a lot of fun.  Heck, it's even got reasons for dungeons built into the game.  I think the fact that it didn't concentrate on exploration & discovery is a function of its era...  Seriously, it could have had some incredible dungeon crawls had the designers spent the time doing so.

QuoteAnd there's just so much material - like seven pages of historical and cultural background on each class, with rituals and short stories, etc. piled on and on. It comes across as a game that's meant to be read rather than played, which is a shame because there's the skeleton of a clever game in there, larded with enormous amounts of non-game content.
I completely agree with that, too.  Although I love the Denizens of Earthdawn books, they frankly needed more mechanics and less... writing.

Dungeon Tiles!

I forgot I bought those too--the first three sets. Highly recommended. Super-quality cardstock, very cheap, very versatile.

Oh, so you did pick those up!  I'm glad you're finding them to your liking!

Yes, and thanks for the tip. In the store the Paizo stuff pales into nothing, and the Cadwallon tiles are just showpieces--very pretty but just not versatile.

I just bought In Harm's Way and Stupor Mundi (for Runequest) on LULU. I haven't received them yet, so the last game I bought that I have had a chance to read was Aces & Eights.

Now looking at the new Elric.

I plan to use it  "As is" with a little bit of paint on it , but with 25mm miniatures and call it a really tall robot, NOT a "mech" for use some time in my GURPS:TRAVELLER game.

It was droogs thread that piqued my interest.  Internet forums have definitely broadened my experience with what games are out there to play.

The HellHound 101

I bought the new mini Savage Worlds at GenCon for $10.

Then my wife accidentally* threw it into the swag bag for the booth, so some lucky %&(# who volunteered at the booth is now walking around with the only RPG product I've bought in the last year.

*Well, she threw it in on purpose, but didn't know it was mine.

Legend of the Five Rings 3e, via Amazon.com.

Kind of an impulse buy, but I'm not displeased with it.  It sure beats some other purchases I've made recently.
