Quote from: Doc Sammy;868330So, what did you think of Boone by Night, Nexus? How ridiculous was it? Is there anything of potential satirical value within?

I'd play it.

It didn't take too long for that to be my impression of W:tA.

This is a game that features a bloodier version of the evil company that pollutes for the sake of polluting from Captain Planet as a major antagonist.

Yeah I know, but that does't bother me that much.  I mean your fighting against it.  It is no different than lord of the ring characters battling against the orcs.

What I find to be stupid is when your allies, the supposed good guys, are stupid enough to stop you from pressing the win button.  Your literally making their life easier and they are stopping which insures the evil one a even greater victory.

That pretty much is several of the Werewolf tribes to the point they should have called it Too Stupid to Live: The Apocalypse.

Especially considering that through their own actions the Werewolves (with ample assistance from the Coyotes) are accellerating the downfall of the world at an impressive rate.

But that is the general premise of all WW games. The factions are all mind numbingly stupid. And if they arent. Then there is a sub-faction that IS.

Back on topic. What ever happened to the groups that were planning to make an alternative to OBS? Fizzled out as expected?

The idea of a company that exists to make pollution with other activities being a cover for that is pretty silly though.  It's something that belongs in a kid's cartoon.  It's pretty cack-handed.

They are trying to fight on a battlefield that most of them are very ill-suited to.  However, by the time the game starts there isn't really anything they can do anyway.  The battle is already lost.  The apocalypse is right around the corner and there isn't really anything you can do about it.  All you can really do is bail frantically while the ship sinks around you.  That's a major theme of all of the oWoD games.  The end is night and there isn't really anything the PCs can do about it.

er. That is kinda the point? Pentex is run by monsters pretty much to a man woman and especially child doing it purely for the evulz.

That doesn't make that motivation any less silly.

Quote from: yosemitemike;868531That doesn't make that motivation any less silly.

It's an animist cosmology.  The earth has an actual spirit.  That spirit can be corrupted.  How do you accomplish that on a global scale without pollution?

Some servants of the Wyrm are into systemized pedophilia because that desecration of the body and mind is reflected in the spirit, it creates a literal dead zone in the child's spirit which then becomes the home of an evil spirit, which leads to further desecration of the child and others.

Now the child is the earth itself, but the goal is the same.  Again, how do you accomplish a desecration of the body of the earth large enough to cause spiritual damage to a gaiasphere without pollution?  Nuclear War certainly, but that's about it.

You can say you don't like Animist cosmologies, or perhaps you didn't read a whole lot of the books, but the logic is there, like any other RPG, provided you accept the conceits of the cosmology.

Now you want to talk about the logic behind the various obligatory White Wolf categorized and warring tribes, there's certainly a claim of silly that can be made there.

I guess I could say that but I didn't.

Quote from: CRKrueger;868537or perhaps you didn't read a whole lot of the books,

I ran a two year campaign of it and had almost all of the books for first and second editions and many of the 3rd edition books so no.  I was that guy that bought and read damn near everything that came out.

I can and have made a claim that having villains whose motivation is more or less "4 teh evulz" is silly.  I will make it again here.  It is silly.  It's silly, shallow and unbelievable especially given W:tA's pretensions of being socially aware.  It's a caricature of a leftist caricature of business.  The game's animist premise didn't excuse the silliness of people (not Wyrm spirits, people) acting like Saturday morning cartoon villains.  It has all of the subtlety of a pipe wrench to the face.

This is getting rather off topic though.

Pentex, at its core, seem as "silly" CoC cultists or Chaos Worshippers. It was driven by a cosmic force that embodied corruption, entropy and destruction and people that have chosen or been possessed to follow it out or madness, greed or are dupes either in denial or too blind or desperate to care.

Where it gets heavy handed is when Pentex becomes a stand in for all corporations or the implication that it represents the "real" world.
Remember when Illinois Nazis where a joke in the Blue Brothers movie?

Democracy, meh? (538)

"The salient fact of American politics is that there are fifty to seventy million voters each of whom will volunteer to live, with his family, in a cardboard box under an overpass, and cook sparrows on an old curtain rod, if someone would only guarantee that the black, gay, Hispanic, liberal, whatever, in the next box over doesn't even have a curtain rod, or a sparrow to put on it."

Coffee Zombie

When I was a teen and playing W:tA, I thought Pentex was absurd. No good motivation, idiotic villainy from Captain Planet (though they always made me think of this band of antagonists, honestly). My friends and I would routinely mock how simplistic the concept was.

The older I get, and the more I see the rampant greed and selfishness behind many large corporations and governments, the less absurd it seems that an evil spirit trying to eat the soul of the planet would use business as an arm to accomplish that end. And now that I work in insurance - well, I know the feeling of a soul slowly choking on the moral grey area one has to walk through to make money.

That's my peace on Pentex.

Quote from: Spinachcat;868389It's like how nobody pays for porn.

Somehow a multi-billion dollar industry exists, but nobody admits to paying for it.

Weird enough, it's more "manly" - and socially acceptable -  to say "I got a hooker in Vegas!" than to say "I pay $9.99 per month for Spankmonkey.com"

Dear God is it REALLY that weird?  Men are supposed to be 'go getters', and going up to a woman and propositioning her is seen as a both proper and acceptable.  Have you ever read a book?  Comic?  Watched a movie?

Watching Porn is like Gaming, a cheap way out of taking charge of your destiny.  (Whatever the crap that means.)

Quote from: Nexus;868408Even more funny that, to my knowledge, a significant portion of the long term fans of the Black Tokyo series are  women.

Anecdotally that's been my experience as well.  And oddly enough they wanted to be the victims, rather than the victors.
