This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What was your first non-fantasy/sci-fi RPG?

Apart from fantasy and sci-fi, what was your first RPG in another genre? Mine was Call of Cthulhu. Didn't really like it at the time because I was forced into it since no one wanted to play D&D. Then came Champions. Both in a club in high school.

Marvel Super Heroes. We had a fair amount of fun with it, but the published adventures we used weren't that great, which didn't help.

I can't think of any game that isn't fantasy or sci-fi.

Call of Cthulu deals with magic and ancient aliens.
Marvel Super Heroes deals with genetic mutants and super science.

That being the case, the very first RPG I ever played; James Bond 007 was my first non-fantasy/sci-fi game.

Probably Top Secret or Champions. We also ad a high school club, and I'm a little iffy on what came when.

I think James Bond and Marvel would be next on my list. Maybe Chill.

Boot Hill (Western) 1979 maybe 1980, 81...
Bushido, 1980-1981
Champions (Supers) 1985
Spycraft (Espionage Thriller)2003
Aces & Eights (Western) 2007

Never was motivated to play or run Horror or Cthulu stories.
Blackmoor grew from a single Castle to include, first, several adjacent Castles (with the forces of Evil lying just off the edge of the world to an entire Northern Province of the Castle and Crusade Society's Great Kingdom.

I *think* it was Star Wars d6, then Cyberpunk 2020 or Call of Cthullhu, then In Nomine Satanis/Magna Veritas or Shadowrun.

Boot Hill then Top Secret (or vice versa...been sooo long!?)
:)
Form the group wisely, make sure you share goals and means.
Set norms of table etiquette early on.
Encourage attentive participation and speed of play so the game will stay vibrant!
Allow that the group, milieu and system will from an organic symbiosis.
Most importantly, have fun exploring the possibilities!

Running: AD&D 2nd. ed.

Well, Star Wars is sci-fi and so are Cyberpunk and Shadowrun. So let's try that again :)

We were playing D&D and the Danish version of Stormbringer (Drager & Dæmoner), but during the Easter holiday, a group of the older roleplayers in the area, hosted a mini-con on the local library and I'm pretty sure my first game was Dark Conspiracy. I remember it as a pretty dreadful game. The day after I played my first game of Call of Cthulhu, and I was sold instantly - the game was The Edge of Darkness, from the back of the CoC rules.
Running: Call of Cthulhu
Playing: Mainly boardgames

Call of Cthulhu isn't fantasy?  Well, if not, then CoC (which is one of my three favourite RPGs of all time).

Aside from CoC, I played one game of Top Secret and one game of James Bond back in the 1980s.  Can't remember which one first.

Beyond that, nothing.  I'm just not interested in playing anything other than fantasy or sci-fi (well, except for CoC of course, if that's categorized as non-fantasy).

Probably some games of CoC that were straight up crime mysteries with no otherworldly elements... normally I'd call CoC scifi horror or science fantasy, and lump superheroes under fantasy or science fantasy.

Benoist

I can see the point about CoC and fantasy. Hm. Could make the same argument about Star Wars, now that I think about it...

Call of Cthulhu is pretty clearly Horror. And Marvel is pretty clearly Supers.

Thank you. I was just about to say that. These genres are pretty clearly defined and have been so for years.
