This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

New Gamers, some "recruiting" themselves.

Quote from: KoltarJust remembered another bunch that "recruit" themselves : Servicemen just out of the military or on leave. The guys who might have looked down on gamers whilst they were in High School are now playing Dungeons & Dragons and loving it. First year that our store was open a soldier explained to me that an RPG needs very little "equipment" to play in the field. All a player needs is his or her character sheet, dice and their imaginations. The DM is doing most of the hard stuff. (A DM also might need the books more)
Also, a lot of these guys get care packages with that sort of thing sent to them.  I'm sure it's a great way to spend time when not on duty.

I know that Marvel makes special comic books for the soldiers.

I just sent out Cold Space and In Harm's Way in a care package for a soldier, along with dice. I know a lot of service folks game, and figured if he didn't want it, he'd give it to a buddy.

Similar with a batch of Roma, Nebuleon and SA! with dice. I have a lot of friends in the military and they value distraction very highly.

Good job Clash!

When you look around you have to wonder,
Do you play to win or are you just a bad loser?

Hinterwelt, flyingmice.  Very cool.

I know.  I've been employed for 9 years mostly to be a distraction.

Not reprints of the old Power Pack and Care Bears comics from the 80s, I assume.  Specially-written and illustrated stories, or just compilations like the old Holiday Grab Bag issues? Any idea what titles they send?

!i!

Gunslinger

Specially written and illustrated stories.  I have one that is a Captain America and Punisher team up.  Punisher says he was in the ARMY, the Marine Corp will be pissed.  The other one I was given was Iron Man.  I'm assuming they're doing this with other big name characters and titles as well.
