What's your favorite Race to Play?

The Butcher

Quote from: Ladybird;578576I liked them, appearance-wise; at the risk of making a WoW/D&D comparison, they reminded me a lot of Draenei, who I also really like.

Nothing wrong with comparing WoW to D&D honestly. WoW's setting is a pretty good example of healthy IP building and one of the good lessons WotC could have taken from Blizzard.

And somewhat relevant to the topic at hand, WoW really has no competitors in the "choose a race" department. Humans, dwarves, two types of elves, honor-bound orcs, tribal black magic trolls, nature loving minotaurs, aliens, zombies, werewolves, and now Kung Fu Panda. And better still, each of these gets a unique starting area which usually does a decent job of driving home the differences between them.

Of course, little effort is spent on making these races feel inhuman or unique. The result is that they're pretty easy to get a handle on, and very accessible to casual players. If anything, the attention given to non-human cultures makes humans feel bland and uninspired in WoW. I know I have a blast leveling my two "monster race" characters (Troll Druid and Undead Warlock).

Tetsubo

Of the classic races, Dwarves. But I am a fan of anthro animal races as well.

RPGPundit

I GM, so this is kind of a moot question, but for a very long time now Humans have been my favorite species.

In group games, I play halflings or kender.  In solo games, either elf or human -- depending on whether or not the world features 'tall elves' or 'short elves'.  If it's tall...I'm going human.  I don't like the 'tall elf' archetype explosion.

I also much prefer the 'athletic halfling' of 3E.  The ones before 3E always seemed...well, silly.  It's one of only two things I can name right off the top of my head that WotC did right.

In D&D, I like to play Humans a lot because they're versatile and can fit into so many archetypes and back-stories.

I also like Elves.

Soylent Green

Traditionally, I've been fond of playing halflings. It's easy to play hero when you are the biggest badass in town but I think it takes a special kind of courage to go adventuring when you are built like a halfling. That's the sort of thing that appeals to me.
New! Cyberblues City - like cyberpunk, only more mellow. Free, fully illustrated roleplaying game based on the Fudge system
Bounty Hunters of the Atomic Wastelands, a post-apocalyptic western game based on Fate. It\'s simple, it\'s free and it\'s in colour!

I'm shocked that no one has said Warforged or Dragonborn yet.

Dragonborn and... Thri-kreen? are pretty cool in concept but too inhuman for me to relate to. So I can't really get into character/backstory with those.

Warforged are... warforged. Fitting into fantasy settings aside, there are people who like sentient robots and people who don't. I like robots per se, I just don't want to play as them.

MGuy

I like Warforged, I like Kalashtar more but humans are my favorite. They generally have very few expectations I am expected to enact when playin them. There may be the matter of what "culture" to make him a part of but usually I'm free to do what I want with the character.

I kind of assumed we were talking mostly core.

Love warforged, changelings, and half giants / goliaths.

I was too, but then I realized the demographic of gamers here is different than TBP, where I imagine one of those two races would be mentioned within the first couple of responses.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

Human.

Jesus Fucking Christ, is this guy honestly that goddamned stupid? He can\'t understand the plot of a Star Wars film? We\'re not talking about "Rashomon" here, for fuck\'s sake. The plot is as linear as they come. If anything, the film tries too hard to fill in all the gaps. This guy must be a flaming retard.  --Mike Wong on Red Letter Moron\'s review of The Phantom Menace

Skaven, but I never get to play them.

Otherwise human, unless its a setting where elves aren't done as "Star Trek" aliens but as actually alien otherworldly creatures.

I played a dwarf once. I didn't like it.
