This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What's your favorite and least favorite genres and why?

What is your most favorite RPG genre, and your least favorite RPG genre?  Why?

Most Favorite = gritty fantasy
This is my most favorite genre.  I like the possibility of player death and the low-magic nature of most gritty fantasy settings.

Least Favorite = Supers
This is the least appealing genre to me.  I just never got into comic books that much as a child.  My brother was big into it, and I would read his comics but I became disenfranchised after reading some of his X-Men comics.  I stopped reading them after they took Storm's powers away and gave her a mohawk.  I thought to myself, "they just screw with these peoples lives too much!"

P.S.- There are so many sub-genres and specialized genres now that there's no way that I was going to attempt to list them.

Benoist

Favorite - old-school, gygaxian medieval fantasy. Aka original Greyhawk, T1-4, Castle Zagyg... that sort of vibe.

Least Favorite - I'd go with hardcore sci-fi. Think Aasimov and such (I love Star Wars, but it really isn't sci-fi to me. It's fantasy). I'm not allergic to sci-fi to read, but I don't like it as an RPG-genre, specifically.

Imperator

Favorite: Gritty sword and sorcery.

Least favorite: Supers / Mechas. I can't really decide which one of them is more irrelevant to me.
My name is Ramón Nogueras. Running now Vampire: the Masquerade (Giovanni Chronicles IV for just 3 players), and itching to resume my Call of Cthulhu campaign (The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man).

KrakaJak

Favorite: Horror - Modern, Fantasy, Sci-Fi etc. If it's horro, I love it!

Least Favorite: D&D 2+, I don't know exactly how to describe it, but whatever genre of fantasy D&D became after AD&D 1st edition. I call it "Magic" fantasy, where nothing makes sense because "it's Magic!", in which magic itself is also left unexplained.

Abyssal Maw

Favorite: Colorful fantasy, to include superheroes
Least favorite: "grim", "historical", or "meant-to-be realistic" settings to include hard sci fi.
Download Secret Santicore! (10MB). I painted the cover :)

flyingmice

Favorite: A toss-up between SF, particularly hard-ish but not ultra-hard, and Historical, particularly post-renaissance. I have a nodding acquaintance with Ancient and Medieval, but I prefer renaissance and after.

Least Favorite: Standard Medieval Fantasy. I don't "get" it. Any fantasy world I touch inevitably become more and more renaissance and less and less medieval. I was *so* happy when Pundit introduced firearms in FtA!GN! Now I can migrate FtA! forward in time to where I'm comfortable! :D

None of this should surprise anyone who knows me at all.

Soylent Green

Love anything with a light touch, fast-pace in a modern or sci-setting.

Dislike anything angsty, overly tactical or that simply takes itself too seriously.
New! Cyberblues City - like cyberpunk, only more mellow. Free, fully illustrated roleplaying game based on the Fudge system
Bounty Hunters of the Atomic Wastelands, a post-apocalyptic western game based on Fate. It\'s simple, it\'s free and it\'s in colour!

Mcrow

Favorite: Sci-Fi (Firm to hard Sci-Fi), second would be Fantasy (Tolkien style)

Least favorite: Supers, I can play it if it is meant to be a spoof but otherwise, no thanks.

Spinachcat

Most Favorite: Deadly Gonzo

Least Favorite: Low Combat / Courtly Political Intrigue

I love merciless games tinged with crazy.   Stuff like Gamma World, Rifts, Planescape, Warhammer, Dark Heresy, Paranoia, Cthulhu.  I love it when shit explodes and if my character explodes, that's cool too.

I get bored with ongoing political intrigues that do not involve hack and slash.  I can do a wee bit of courtly stuff in L5R, but we better be slashing ASAP.  While I am a big ST:TOS fan, my fav ST RPG was when we played Klingon explorers.

Yeah, "deadly Gonzo is sweet". That's why I like Rfts and Cthulhu as well.

Ronin

Favorite: Sci-Fi, Pulp, Steampunk/Victorian

Least Favorite: Low Combat, Courtly Political Intrigue
Vive la mort, vive la guerre, vive le sacré mercenaire

Ronin\'s Fortress, my blog of RPG\'s, and stuff

Aos

Favorite: Cosmic supers (although gritty Batman style does it for me too), Gritty S&S, and Gonzo Science Fantasy.

Least Favorite (by far): Vanilla Fantasy. I think VF might be the only genre I might be hesitant to play even with a good GM.
You are posting in a troll thread.

Metal Earth

Cosmic Tales- Webcomic

jswa

Favorite: I have no idea.

Least Favorite: Gonzo kitchen-sink type stuff (ala Rifts). I hate hate hate hate hate hate it. Especially if it's rooted in the 80's. Anything whacky in general, really, with the exception of Paranoia.

Pseudoephedrine

Favourite: Science fantasy (Dark Heresy, Shadowrun, certain styles of Alternity, the Culture)

Least: Anime-inspired settings, especially if they're based on licensed properties
Running
The Pernicious Light, or The Wreckers of Sword Island;
A Goblin\'s Progress, or Of Cannons and Canons;
An Oration on the Dignity of Tash, or On the Elves and Their Lies
All for S&W Complete
Playing: Dark Heresy, WFRP 2e

Favorite Space Fantasy a.k.a. Star Wars - May 1977, an imagination was sparked and hasn't ever stopped. Yes, I have tried to make it stop. Fantasy is a close second though.

Least Favorite Horror - Too many GMs treat this genre as "critter of the week," and far too many GMs can't run horror games for shit. I know that I can't. A lot of other things about the genre just leaves me disinterested.
