This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What's the Most you've ever spent on a single miniature?
« on: September 01, 2019, 04:14:39 AM »
I just dropped $30 on an unpainted miniature.  I've wanted to add a Dracolich to my lineup for a while now; and I thought the Unpainted Pathfinder Deep Cuts Gargantuan Green Dragon had a good enough look.  Certainly passable for a Dracolich; if I tell the players, that's what it is.

Or it's a White Dragon, a Dragon Statue, a Ghost Dragon, a Zombie Dragon, or an Albino Dragon?

There really are a silly number of different Dragon types.

I play Wallet-hammer...I mean Warhammer.

I've dropped $50 on a pro-painted monster or general. But $50 is two cheap dinners out, or one good dinner. So if I get more pleasure over time with that shiny new toy than that one or two meals, I can't really complain. Especially as I can't put the dinner on eBay afterwards. Or at least, I really, really shouldn't do that! Whereas, old minis usually get sold at equal or higher than my purchase price.

£30 on a nicely painted and based huge Reaper blue/black dragon from the Orc's Nest shop window. Before that £25 for a pewter hydra, likewise.

Unpainted I think I've not paid more than about £10.50, for the Reaper giant/titan skeleton mini. For larger minis getting them pre-painted for an extra £12 or so seems way better value, they are better than I can do, comparable to what my friend Kimberly can do - and she's free, but the gratification is delayed. :D

Edit: Kimberly sells cool prop type stuff - wands, jewelry, Steampunk gear - for on Etsy for the cospplayer in your life - https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/MagicalMiscellany

I bought a warforged wizard miniature off ebay for like $6 including shipping for the 4th ed D&D game a friend was running.  I don't really get into miniatures, and am fine for using a coin to represent my character most of the time if we HAVE to have minis.
That said, I have been getting the mega-construx single pack figures because not only are they highly possible, but they would also work pretty well as miniatures IMO.

(honestly my opinion on miniatures is that gamers buy them because they were told that they are too old to be buying action figures, so miniatures lets them scratch that itch.  when I was told I was too old to buy action figures by my parents, I pointed out that my dad still buys trains, and my mother buys dolls, so if I was too old for action figures at 12, what did that make them?  that shut them up fast.)

I know some people own thousands of miniatures.  I have seen the pictures.  I am in the mid hundreds, even counting 2D pawns.

I have focused more upon sheer numbers, than upon having the highest quality.  Most, but not all of my 3D miniatures are Unpainted Reaper Bones.  Most of my painted miniatures are Dragons, or Dinosaurs.

On my Unpainted Minis, I have at least highlighted the blades of their weapons, their horns, their claws, their teeth, etc

Most so far was on a 2nd gen Keeper of Secrets because GW staff actually listend to my advice and added a second head closer to the classic Keeper. The box is in storage but believe payed either 20$ or 50$ for it. This was also the last time I did business with Ryders as they refused to honour a discount coupon and were by then thoroughly in GW's pocket and had removed all other non GW gaming material. And were gouging customers by jacking the prices. Though that last may have been mandated by GW.

Prior to that most payed was 15$ I think for a Vermin Lord to use with Warhammer Quest.

40K Knight Castellan for $145

For RPG only minis, I've got a few resin singles and larger monsters in the $20 range but mostly use the Reaper figs and the mini sets from the "cool mini or not" style board games.

The one on the left is the Green, the one on the right is the White. They both look great, but I really like the White's stance.

so you don't take your miniatures (usually your newest and/or favorite ones) over to a friend's house, make up complex stories and battles between 2 or more sides, and occasionally make sound effect noises with your mouth during the battles?  I suppose you don't make vrooming noises for the land vehicles or frwooshing noises for the air vehicles either?

and they don't all have names and personalities that you know by heart?

Own it, Spinach. Some of us still buy actual He-Man dolls. :D (I can see my Super7 5.5" He-Ro and Eldor from where I'm typing this, and I'm eagerly anticipating MotU Origins next year.)

EDIT: Oh, and Remial? Mega Construx MotU figures exist ... including Castle Grayskull. :)

On a single mini? Not much. I have some larger lead RPG minis (e.g., dragons), but I don't remember how much I paid for them. It was years ago.

But on an armies? I've put more than I care to think about (or admit to my wife) into various 15mm armies and their basing.

yup. I know, I have all of them except Teela and Beastman (my walmart never got that wave) and I don't have the room for Grayskull, otherwise I'd order that.  I do have a bunch of the WoW Mega-blox, and those are cool too.
