This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What Old School games do you like?

Fair enough.  I don't agree with most of his substantive philosophical views, but think that he was a brilliant writer.  I've always found his works to be thought-provoking.

I was influenced to change the avatar by this recent (excellent) book.

Obviously, this has nothing to do with RPGs, so I'll cease talking about old paranoid J.J. now. :)

Quote from: Benoist;401842Oh God. For fuck's sakes. Is that Rousseau you took as your avatar?!

My reaction as well. And no, not a fan in the slightest.

Yeah, number me among the "not a fan of Rousseau" group, too.
The problem is not that power corrupts, but that the corruptible are irresistibly drawn to the pursuit of power. Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito.

Interesting that an avatar of Rousseau raises so much ire, whereas my previous avatar of Hobbes prompted nary a comment.   :hmm:

Also, I'm not clear on what being a 'fan' amounts to with respect to someone like Hobbes or Rousseau.  I find the views of both philosophers extremely interesting (both obviously were hugely important historically), yet I do not agree with either.

Anyhow, since three of my favourite posters have registered strong negative reactions to this avatar, and people seem to understand one's choice of an avatar (at least with respect to a historical thinker) as entailing some kind of 'endorsement' of that person's views, I'll be sure to change it in the near future.

Okay, back to RPGs... :)

Well look. My avatar may be a homemade depiction of Killfuck Soulshitter, but at least it is not freaking Rousseau. ;)

Oh sure, the man knew how to write. When it comes to the ideas however... man. From the Good Savage to his views on Education, I just can't stand the guy.

Sure. Just took me by surprise. :)

Don't let that stop you. You're not really Rousseau, after all. :D

Soylent Green

OKay, so I guess now we know.

Rousseau is out.
Wonder Woman is in.

The things you learn at the RPG Site.
New! Cyberblues City - like cyberpunk, only more mellow. Free, fully illustrated roleplaying game based on the Fudge system
Bounty Hunters of the Atomic Wastelands, a post-apocalyptic western game based on Fate. It\'s simple, it\'s free and it\'s in colour!

It's funny that you'd even think Rousseau and Wonder Woman are even remotely comparable in this conversation. The things you learn at the RPG Site... :D

Actually, the Amazons of Paradise Island were one of the inspirations of Rousseau's conception of a just society.

Naw, I'm going to change it.  Strangely, it never occurred to me that one's choice of a historical thinker as an avatar might be interpreted as an endorsement of that thinker's views, even though that is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

Apologies for pushing this thread so far off course...

Follow up:  After I had Mr. Beckett's line in my sig and properly attributed to him for about a year or something, he politely asked me to remove the attribution as he was kind of mortified to be well known around those parts for such heavy vulgarity.  Naturally I complied, but kept the quote around for another few months or so.

Poor Jean-Jacques. I know Avatar sucked hard, but it wasn't entirely his fault. :D
