This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What Books Would You Take?

Quote from: BalbinusI considered Qin as my wild card game, and even as my Supers game, but I've not played it yet which makes that a bit of a high risk strategy.

I understand the temptation.  I did the same thing with Angel for my Conspiracy/Horror game simply because I'm vaguely familiar with Unisystem from AFMBE and WitchCraft - not that I've actually run either one yet - I'm very familiar with the show, and people have made such glowing statements about it.  I don't actually own the book yet, much to my chagrin, but it sounds just about right.

Apparently if you intend to buy just one of Buffy and Angel, Angel is the one to get.  It's supposed to be extremely good, and to have the good stuff in the Buffy book plus extra.

This is a hard one...I keep vacillating between Call of Cthulhu 5th Edition, World of Darkness, or Angel.

I guess I'll choose Angel.

Damn...yeah, Angel is a very good choice...I could do a lot of damage with Angel :D

Cool.  I always liked the "Angel" TV series more than "Buffy" anyway, so that suits me just fine.

Fantasy: D&D Rules Cyclopedia (although I'd have to get a copy first, as I currently only have all the individual box set books)
Sci-Fi/Space: Mekton II
Conspiracy/Horror: no interest in this genre
Superheroes: Marvel Superheroes Advanced Set
Wild Card: (Can be any RPG product for any category): Mekton Z Plus

gale_wolf

Fantasy: Rules Cyclopedia (would have been the Dragon Warriors set if not for the 1 book rule)

Sci-Fi/Space: Silhouette Core Deluxe (would have been Mekton Zeta & Mekton Zeta Plus if not for the 1 book rule).

Conspiracy/Horror: Buffy The Vampire Slayer (or maybe Angel, damn indecision)

Superheroes: Mutants & Masterminds 2e

Wild Card: Big Eyes Small Mouth 2e Revised

Quote from: Zachary The FirstSo, by some bizarre universal decree (yeah, this is pretty much just a silly beer-drinkin' question), you are told that you will only be allowed 1 RPG book (or boxed set) for each of the following ctegories.  You will not be allowed to acquire new product.  You can only game using those books for the rest of our life.  Which RPGs would you choose?

Here are the categories:

Fantasy:
Sci-Fi/Space:
Conspiracy/Horror:
Superheroes:
Wild Card: (Can be any RPG product for any category)

What's your combo gonna be?

I've posted variants of this before on other gaming sites, but it's always cool to see the responses...
Can I take just GURPS Characters and GURPS Campaigns (and maybe GURPS Powers)? I like tons and tons of games, but I know that I'm always happy with the way GURPS does things.

If you think I'm violating the spirit of the poll, tell me so and I'll pick a gaming book for every category.

Those are practically the same picks that I made.  I "cheated" a little and said the 4th edition boxed set that had both CHARACTERs and CAMPAIGNS in it.

I'm gonna pretend this happens at the end of the year.

Fantasy: Arrrrrrrrrgh. REIGN, I suppose. Or the 1e AD&D PHB*.
Sci-Fi: Whichever of StarCluster and Nebuleon grab me more, unless I get a Traveller box set by then.
Conspiracy/Horror: CoC d20 for the essays, which I will use to run Nemesis games. Nemesis is free so it doesn't count, right? If it does, I suppose it'd be CoC 5th.
Superheroes: Wild Talents, the only superhero game I've ever liked.
Wild Card: Ex Machina, because in my mind cyberpunk is different from sci-fi.

* If this is the case, my wild card is the 1e AD&D DMG.

In a way, I don't think that Angel belongs in the 'Horror' category at all (sure, it has vampires and demons, but they're more low powered superheroes/villains than 'horrific' creatures).  It's a system that can be used to run pretty much any kind of 'modern' adventure.  It's my system of choice for anything other than 'standard' fantasy.

Fantasy: The Shadow of Yesterday*

Sci-Fi/Space: Don't play 'em...so AFMBE

Conspiracy/Horror: Mortal Coil

Superheroes: Also don't play 'em...so InSpectres

Wild Card: In Nomine

Argh...um...okay, I'll take a stab at it.

Fantasy: Spirit of The Century (Well, Fate 3.0 when it's available.  In the meantime, this is close enough.  It also gives me a good backup Wildcard.)

Sci-Fi/Space: Hard Nova ][(EABA is actually my first choice, but it's nicely covered below)

Conspiracy/Horror: Code: Black  (My systems are all already covered in other options, so I'll go with an EABA sourcebook by BTRC here.  Covers conspiracies and horror quite nicely.)

Superheroes:EABA by BTRC (I don't play supers, so this also gives me a backup for any other genre.  And you can play supers with it if you like.)

Wild Card: Conspiracy X 2.0 (provides nice Unisystem backup and another universal engine)

Drew

Fantasy: WFRP 2e

Sci-fi/Space: Don't really play them, but if pressed I'd go with Cyberpunk 2020. There's a lot of mileage in that system.

Conspiracy/Horror: CoC/Delta Green.

Superheroes: M&M 2e.

Wild Card: Savage Worlds, with Exalted a close second.

Melinglor

Fantasy: Heroquest.

SciFi: Star Wars D6.

Horror/Conspiracy: Over the Edge I guess. . .I haven't played a lot in this genre.*

Superheroes: Capes.

Wildcard: Tough. I think I'm gonna go with Dogs in the Vineyard. . .though Big Eyes Small outh is tempting for versatility combined with simplicity.

*Dead of Night sounds cool, but I haven't read/played it.

Peace,

You realize I basically only play 1 or 2 games, right? ;)

Fantasy: Exalted
Science Fiction: Jovian Chronicles
Conspiracy/Horror: Tribe 8
Superheroes: Mekton Zeta (c'mon, convince me it's not a superhero game and if it isn't, what category does it fall under?)
Wild Card: Spirit of the Century or Fate 3.0 (when it comes out).
