Title: What Are You Playing/Running?
Post by: Zachary The First on March 15, 2008, 10:49:32 AM
..and what do you want to play/run next?

Hadn't seen one of these threads for a while.  I'll start out:

Playing:  Nothing (outside of ENnies submissions, I should add)

Running:  Rolemaster:  The Irrin Campaign (see sig; heavily streamlined RM), and my Epic Roleplaying: Bronze Age game.

Want To Play:  Anything!  We've got a cool modern-day horror game going on at our FLGS, but I have a scheduling conflict.

Want To Run:  Next up in the rotation will likely be a Space Opera/Sci-Fi game based around running a run-down old space station (system TBD).  There's a list of over a dozen other games I'd like to run soon, but realistically, they'll have to wait (except for one-shots).

Playing: Basic D&D, a very loose, open campaign where anybody can DM. Currently assaulting the Caves of Chaos.

Running: Well, it's not my turn for Basic, so the answer is nothing, I guess.

Want to Play: The Blossoms are Falling; we did clan burning and made up characters some time ago, but schedules haven't worked out. I hope we can still give this one a go.

Want to Run: Either a homebrew iron-age/S&S campaign using (most likely) some mishmash of the BRP family, or a Talislanta 2e campaign.

Just rpgs?
Playing: Deadlands,
Running: Metal, Magic, and Lore; Wooden Suits and Iron Men
Want to Play: CthulhuTech, Unhallowed Metropolis, Trail of Cthulhu, Qin
Want to run: There's my 'always' list, with Arduin; Space: 1889; Castle Falkenstein; Terra Incognita; CORPS; Mercenaries, Spies, and Private Eyes; Unknown Armies; Over the Edge; Savage Worlds, and a million other games for which I have scenarios in the box and waiting.
There's my 'hot to run at the moment and designing scenarios' list, featuring a pretty high-energy space-fantasy campaign, starting with Rolemaster/Dark Space, but taking it up a notch. In a Herculean effort to control my fickle gamer syndrome, I'm not working on any other projects I'm not playing at the moment. I'm also going to play MetaScape soon, if it kills me.

Playing: Unknown Armies, Dark Heresy, and in the very near future I'll be helping to playtest a friend's new game design.

Running: Nothing. My long-term REIGN campaign has finished, and I'm in the last stages of writing up my doctoral thesis, so GMing is on the back burner for the moment until I've had time to recharge my batteries and polish off the major drain on my time.

Want to play: Old-school D&D (OD&D, Moldvay B/X, RCD&D, 1E AD&D, I've got plenty of options), WFRP, Runequest or Call of Cthulhu or Stormbringer or (fingers crossed!) Chaosium's new generic BRP game, Star Wars D6, Burning Wheel/Burning Empires, Aces and Eights, Rolemaster.

Want to run:: Old-school D&D, any of the BRP games mentioned above (plus my homebrewed version of Nephilim), Star Wars D6, Burning Wheel/Burning Empires, Aces and Eights, Whispering Vault, Forward to Adventure!, Dying Earth, Heaven and Earth, Puppetland, Villains and Vigilantes.

I run Nobilis and Praedor on alternating Saturdays, with Puppetland as an occasional filler game.

In Nobilis: after recently revealing the conspiracy behind the Lodge of Nidus, a sinister cult of cockroach-worshipping sin-eaters whose god wished to infest Heaven, the PCs are now heading towards the edge of Creation on the trail of the cult leader's daughter, who in spite of embracing the Excrucian cause of destruction out of her own free will still remains virtuous enough that the angels might not bear to bar her perfect soul from entering the Brightest Realm, even though during the battle with the Lodge she may have acquired a signet ring which allows its wearer to pass unharmed through the flaming wall that surrounds the universe, making it possible for her to smuggle in some horror from the Beyond.

In Praedor: while being hunted down by both the mortal authorities of Ferrignia and a secret cabal of sorcerers, the PCs have learned that the so-called Holrusian merchant prince who originally hired them to recover a long-lost medical device from the ruins of Warth (supposedly in order to save his son from an outbreak of plague) seems in fact to be none other than Kirel Curarim, the Faceless King, who after centuries of research and experimentation has finally abandoned all hope of cleansing the world of its extradimensional contamination and now instead intends to forcibly convert the remnants of humanity into something that could survive in the chaos of the Cursed Lands.

Running: Burning Empires (as The Terror), Burning THAC0 (Village of Hommlet)

Want To Play/Run: I'm working on lining up some people for In Harm's Way: Wild Blue (whenever that ships). Historically that takes 6 months-1 year so it'll be out by the time I've got people ready.

EDIT: Yeah my want to play/run is a bit longer, and I know there are other games that I'm cool with that I'll play in the meantime, but I'm trying to focus on the top of the list of what I'm looking forward to because I've got other stuff outside of just playing/running on the go now.

Seriously?

You should pitch the hell out of that, if I may say so myself.

Presumably, apart from the odd minor thing, 2E is not too different from the Big Blue Book? Seven Kingdoms, templates for chargen, no humans, colorful characters, traveling to weird places encountering weirder locals, even more art by whatsherface?

Setting wise, mostly the same as the blue brick. Some things have name changes in 4e, and a piece of metaplot was incorporated into the baseline (replacement of the Quan Empire with the Kang Empire) before being rolled back in 5e.

Mechanically it's more level-based and has a more traditional, less free-form magic system, but not as clearly written. Version 3e cleaned things up a bit so I would use that as a reference if necessary.

Playing: D20 (loosely taken from Star Wars Revised) WWII campaign.  Straight as an arrow.  Fucking brutal.  Keep your spare characters at the ready.

Running: Mutants & Masterminds 1st ed., set in 1950's cold war United States.  Very cheesy and over the top.

Wanting to Play/Run:  something that hits a sweet spot between the two above campaigns.  Sometimes out WWII PCs all feel a bit similar and ordinary (doesn't help that we play more than one character each), whereas trying to consistently come up with villains that can challenge the guys supe's that stay fresh and interesting every week can be draining.

Running: Scion. The group just made the jump to demigod and I'm in the planning stages for the next section.

Also ran AD&D (1e) last weekend, but that was just a one shot.

Playing: Warhammer FRP. We've played face-to-face and are currently handling some stuff over email. Another GM is running Dark Heresy, but we've only played one session so far.

Want to play: Scion. One of the players in our group will be running the  premade adventure in Demigod. We'll use the PCs from my game. I asked him to do it in order to stress test the book before we make the leap, but am also looking forward to the chance to be a PC for the game after being the GM for both Exalted and Scion.

Want to Run: More Scion. If I have to pick a different game it'd be 4e, but I'm more looking forward to playing that one. Hopefully I won't draw the figurative short straw when the 3 core books come out. :)

Yeah. :)

It's better to say that I like epic gaming, and so far Scion does it the best for me. I also liked Exalted when I ran it, but didn't care for Epic 3.x.

But we're also playing WFRP and DH, which are two games that start you almost as weak as you can possibly be and make you struggle for every step on the ladder. If the thread had come a week later when I'm playing Scion, my "what do you want to play" would have probably been "More Warhammer!" :)

A dark version of Digimon season 1 (one of my players happens to be a creative GM),
An alien invasion BESM game,
An online wiki Amber game.

Running:
Amber Diceless (third story arc to my long long long spikards campaign) which we started last friday.
I'll start running Nephilim as soon as I've assimilated the background and system satisfactorily enough.

Want to Play:
L5R (I have GMed it a hundred times but never get to play :( ),
Kult (same thing),
Call of Cthulhu,
Amber Diceless,
Nephilim.

Want to Run:
Kult (I've traumatized most of my players, must find new victims),
Ghost in the Shell RPG (using Ex Machina's rules),
Blame! RPG One-Shot (based on the manga, using Ex Machina for it too),
other things I can't think of right now...

Playing (Tabletop) :
An unknown True20 game following the implosion of our GURPS Mystaria game. (Our GM was too clever for his own good and lack of players scuppered his plans.)
Playing (PbP Forum) :
Dragon Warriors 'Shadowed Sails' - evil and intrigue in the T'aashim lands and the crusader held city of Ibrahim.
Tunnels and Trolls 'Delve till you die' - a simple T&T dungeon delve where each player has a stable of six characters as replacements. So far, we're on a boat...
GURPS 'Black Ops 1961' - Set in the earlier days of the Company, the WhiteHouse has gone into full security lockdown, blood was seen on the windows, and the Company's agent in the Secret Service has gone offline. Are we bad enough to save President Kennedy from otherworldy foes? (I get the sneaking suspicion that the afterword to this game will involve one of us with a sniper rifle at Dealey Plaza)
Running (Tabletop) :
Buggerall - A game with no rules, no dice and crucially, no players.
Running (PbP Forum) :
Cyberpunk 2020 'Modern Life is Rubbish' - Designed to be a series of mini scenarios with a central theme leading to a climax. Currently comatose with the occasional twitch. Lost one player to real-life internet issues and another two who are too busy to post but don't want to quit the game.
Would like to Play (Tabletop or PbP Forum) :
Something Sci-Fi along the Firefly lines of independant traders working on both sides of the law.
Would like to Run (Tabletop) :
Savage Worlds 'Kiwi Scorpions' - A WW2 LRDG game with each player running a truck with a 3-4 man team.
Tunnels & Trolls 'High Seas Floater' - Pirates, T&T style. Yarrr.
Would like to Run (PbP Forum) :
Sod All - I've learned my lesson.

The new Battlestar Galactica.
Will aim for paranoia in the group guessing just who is a cylon. :D

Playing:  Just finished playing in Mr A's 1970s British punk Buffy game, great stuff

Running:  Going back to my Classic Traveller with homebrew setting from Monday

Want To Play:  Happily, any of the stuff the other two GMs in my group run, but particularly Malefices (which I doubt I shall, I think I was the only one really into that)

Want To Run: Call of Cthulhu.  Also, a classic dungeon crawl with equipment rules, encumbrance rules, the whole nine yards, played almost (but not quite) as a boardgame.  Probably using Rules Cyclopedia (as I own it), go into the dungeon, try to get out with as much as you can, retreat, rest up, go again, classic D&D as Gary made it.

Playing:Sadly I never play. No one else is willing to run a game. Despite  repeated encouragement from me.

Running: Several things at once actually: D20 Modern Zombie Horror Survival Game-set in near present day Grand Rapids, where we all live.

D&D 3.5e-We just bought these books, and created a whole campaign world from clothe (The Middle Kingdoms), so we're getting our use out of them. The PC's have just liberated, through purchase, 10,000 slaves. It wiped them out financially, and it's threatening to cause a civil war in the region their at, since they plan on just freeing them. (Add int hey bough nearly every available worker out there in a market that needs people...well it's going to be funny.)

We just finished an SR3 campaign in which they played a street gang that rose to control their neighborhood. Intrigue and betrayal was the watchwords for this game. The game just ended after they finally betrayed, and murdered their Yakuza "Boss", a middleman that controlled their hood for the Oyabun. After striking a deal, and disgracing him they were finally able to murder him.

Tomorrow we're short a few players, so we're playing another one shot. The last one was a Buffy inspired D20 Modern game, in which they hunted down paranormal creatures that murdered and ate people across the Pacific Northwest.

Want To Play:  Anything. I never get to play. I crave a TMNT game for some reason.

Want To Run: A Twilight 2000 inspired D20  Modern Game, Another D&D 3.5e game, a superheroes game of some sort. A GI Joe inspired D20 Modern Game

Edit

All of my games are tabletop. I am playing in two PB3's but they are both stalled.

Playing: Eberron game over AIM with some buds from DE. I might have to quit if the game I'm running starts meeting regularly (crossin' my fingers).

Running: Dungeons and Dragons. Perfect bunch of players really... the "played once or twice back in the day" variety. Familiar enough that I don't have to explain so much. Unfamiliar enough that there's little rules abuse, and I can still throw them a curveball now and again. We met this past Friday, and if all goes well the game may continue even after that.

Want to play: Something that isn't Dungeons and Dragons. Nothing against Dungeons and Dragons... I just want to try other things. More specifically though: Jovian Chronicles/Heavy Gear, Hellboy by way of Mutants and Masterminds, or Unknown Armies.

Want to run: More of what I'm already running? If I have to pick something else, then Iron Heroes, Star Wars Saga, or something giant robots using True 20 and Dream Pod 9's mecha compendium.

I'm playing in a couple of LARPs right now.

I really want to run: Christ. Anything, as soon as I have a stable player base and the time. I've had a NWoD mortal ghost-haunting game ready for a while, and I'm dying to run my True20 D&D game, but trying to set a campaign style up for just a short run, since we're all really low on time these days.

I really want to play: Burning Wheel's Under a Serpent Sun setting. I'm going to be a gin-soaked wizard with a .45. There's nothing that isn't awesome about that.

I'd be interested in hearing more about the 18th Century CoC game, the sword and planet AD&D game and how the EPT game is going.

The others interest me too, but the above I might run myself hence the particular interest.

Forgot to say originally, one of my players really wants me to run Space 1889 again.  I love the game, so that'll happen sometime this year all going well.

I'd be interested in hearing more about the 18th Century CoC game ....

That was me, so really, the question is what do you wanna know?

I wanted a slightly Solomon Kane style game (having just bought the Savage World of SK as well as Witch Hunter, the Invisible World), but decided to go with COC. I am using my own variant of the Cthulhu D20 rules (I included a "balanced option" alongside that games' defensive/offensive character options).

I simply allowed players to choose their "profession" and select 12 skills that go with the profession. I started them at third level and added rules for flintlocks and so on from some d20 sourcebook or other. Hit points are equal to Con and +1 hit point per level (no Con modifier).

The game is set in Scotland in the 1720's (the time of Rob Roy). I started it in Jedburgh, largely because I found some good information about that town on the net, including a map of about the right period, a modern map and a downloadable pdf with some of sites of interest and some great historical information. I changed a few things to suit my story (for example, the castle has been converted into a gaol already (which didn't actually happen until later on) and I weaved some of the mythos into the town locations/history and so on (starting with Bishop Ecgred of Lindisfarne in 854).

http://www.jedburgh-online.org.uk/

After six successful game sessions, including several duels with British army officers (one of the characters is a notable swordsman), a run in with the Witch Finder Lazarus Twice, a narrow escape from the Bounty Hunter Quintin Black (another character is a noblewoman, who funds her lifestyle as a "highwayman") and, eventually (getting back to the actual plot) involving finding and restoring a cross bearing an Elder sign to the crossbase, to seal the gate that was being used by the Cult of Mordiggian. Needing to leave Jedburgh in a hurry, the characters have now moved on to Edinburgh, where there has been a spate of grave robberies.....

Running: Classic Traveller

Its an expirament of sorts. One player and I as Referee have staked out a table in our favorite bar on Thursday afternoons to play CT. I want to see how people react and if we can get any interest in RPGs going since its a different environment than what is standard for gaming.

Playing: Call of Cthulhu 'Tatters of the King', except some of the players have staged a walkout as it's 'too boring'. Unfair IMO, the guy is a new GM and trying hard, and doing well I thought.
PbP; Gygax memorial Keep on the Borderlands. GURPS4 Cyberpunk. Twilight 2000 v2.2 'Pirates of the Vistula'. 2 x Dark Sun (D&Dv3.5) over at RPOL. Morrowind via FUDGE. 2x RuneQuest 3 via e-mail.

Running: Dark Sun (D&Dv3.5) over at RPOL. CyberPunk2020 'Tales of the Forlorn Hope'.

Want to Play: Runequest face-to-face.

Want to Run: I hope to run Runequest 3 'Shadows on the Borderland' soon.

Reading: School stuff. Anglo, 'The Martial Arts of Renassiance Europe'. Brigden, 'New Worlds, Lost Worlds; The Rule of the Tudors'. Cohen, 'By the Sword'.

Running: I'm currently running an online 2nd Edition campaign set on Krynn's lost continent of Taladas.

Want to Play: I'd like to play in a Dark Sun or Planescape campaign. I'd also like to try a Lacuna or Dead Inside game.

Want to Run: If I had the opportunity, I'd run a Classic D&D, STAR WARS d6 or a Space 1889 campaign. A Children of Fire game would be interesting too.

I'm also setting up a D&D 4e game (to replace IH once we're done) and a FATE game (for a second group).

I'd love to run or play in a Burning Empires game, and to play in a D&D 4e game.

Running: Nearing the end of a WHFRP campaign. To be honest it should have been finished by late last year but scheduling difficulties have stretched the bastard out too much. Loved the campaign but can't wait to finish it.

Playing: I wish.

Want to play: The upcoming M&M game one of my groups running. I've never played much supers so I can't wait. Another player has come up with a D&D game set around a growing village. The concept's sound and I've only ever played three sessions of D&D so it should be interesting.

Want to run: Loads of stuff. After finishing the WHFRP campaign I really want to do a bunch of one-offs with the other games I have. Cthulhutech looks really good as a number of different types of games, AFMBE sounds fun and I've still to try out stuff like Starchildren and The Dying Earth RPG. I'll probably push for a once monthly Saturday afternoon game for thi8s stuff so we can have our normal Thursday night.

I haven't done much gaming over the past eight months, thanks to (a.) job travel; (b.) job search; and (c.) long-distance girlfriend.

However, I still managed some gaming (:D ) :

Last Ran: Basic D&D (Moldvay) one-shot adventure.  (Last proper campaign: C&C.)

Last Played: Spirit of the Century.

I'll be moving soon (found a new job; girlfriend will now be short-distance), and hope to find a new group with whom the following might be possible...

Would Like to Run: Rolemaster Classic, Savage Worlds, or Mircolite20.

Would Like to Play: D&D (any version), C&C, or any game I'd run.
