Warriors of the Red Planet

There aren't many new RPGs that I purchase these days - usually I just pick up the occasional supplement for the systems I already own. Nor are there many release schedules that I follow with any attention. But one RPG-in-development did catch my eye a while ago: Warriors of the Red Planet.

A while ago... 2 years ago now since I subscribed to updates on this blog. I really enjoy Science-Fantasy and was intrigued by the class design decisions and art previews that have trickled out, erratically. I thought it was going to shape up to be a must-have.

But, damn, if this doesn't look like a product stuck in limbo these days - or maybe consigned to being vaporware. No blog updates for 3 months; not much of a presence on the blogs of the writer and artist; no responses to queries - through blog comments or emails. It's disappointing.

I am a huge fan of the John Carter of Mars books, so I hope to see rpg's made for that setting.  Hope that one gets off the ground.

The Butcher

WotRP looks good, thanks for the link.

I really, really wished that someone more well-versed in Barsoomiana than myself would do a D6 version, ideally hewing as close to the old D6 Star Wars as possible.

Nothing wrong with hacking any version of D&D (I'd use SWN because it's halfway there already) but I get the feeling sword-and-planet and the D6 system would be a great fit.

I never heard of this, but the idea sure seems good!

There is also this bestiary for 3rd edition that came out awhile ago. Wonder how compatible it might be with Warriors?

It probably wouldn't be too challenging to tweak the d20 stats from this supplement to match up with OD&D-ish/S&W stats from WotRP. It appears that in WoRP they provide values for ascending and descending AC.

Finally found/elicited an update on WotRP from the art/layout guy. Couple more months to go to complete artwork and layout.

RPGPundit

This is quite interesting; you should see if you can get him to come here and post on theRPGsite about his game; I'm sure it would have a good reception.

It's pretty easy to find D&D barsoon monster stats on the web; there's even an unofficial supplement or two.
Yeah, but who gives a fuck? You? Jibba?

Well congrats. No one else gives a shit, so your arguments are a waste of breath.

Thor's Nads

Hello.

Yep, seriously working on finishing up WotRP. It was in limbo for a bit after the John Carter movie came out, not that it was a bad movie, but it was just "OK" (with some bits that were actually quite good). The source material was so great that the movie should have been at least really, really good - but really should have been great!

anyways, this took the wind out of my sails for the project for a bit. But I set a real deadline to get it done, so we'll have something for Dundracon 2013.

Glad to hear people are interested!

Yes, I lurk from time to time, I really should post more often!

Now that Warriors of the Red Planet is available, I'll probably spend more time talking it up.

Thor's Nads

I wrote an adventure for Warriors of the Red Planet to run at Big Bad Con over the weekend. It was a good time, the players - as players tend to do - did unexpected and very clever things.

The adventure was designed "sandbox" style, not as a railroad. So it is more like an adventure location, than a linear adventure. Though it does have a series of events that happen roughly in order. There are some Lovecraftian influences, quite a bit of Gygax (Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun to be exact), and of course plenty of Burroughs.

The player's managed to avoid the final encounter and the big aerial battle at the end I was planning on, so it ended about a half hour earlier then intended. I collected the playtest notes and am in the process of incorporating them, and tightening up the adventure all around.
