I'm looking for that typical pith helmet wearing, mutton chop growing, mustache twirling explorer type NPC I can use as a rival for my players in this new campaign I'm starting.

I don't even know if this will work yet, but I'm looking to build such an over-the-top cliche'd character that they cliche' become invisible.

Ideas?

I played in a campaign once with a fantastic foil like that. He was a grist-mill hunter/guide/merc.   Horrible reputation for constantly hiring new recruits and then taking them on expeditions, and then returning alone with whatever artifact or big game he was looking for, and then hiring more.

He actually offered the players a job, but we were so freaked out by his reputation, we took a pass.  For the rest of the campaign he was always a step ahead of us, sending his new little minions to nip at our heels and be crushed, but still slipping away with whatever goods were in the offing.

Characterwise, he was sort of a cross between Beloch from Raiders of the Lost Ark and Billy Bob Thornton's Bad Santa.

Raider of the Lost Ark: Belloq for the "Let's at least be civil while we try to kill each other over the same goal" attitude...

What I need now is a good mercenary and a peice of well read type character to add to the mix. Any ideas?

Uhhh, been racking my brains over this one.

Two thoughts:

Doc Holliday in Tombstone: "I'm yuh huckleberry."  Maybe constantly swilling on potions that counteract his debilitating illness a la Elric, but a riproaring badass neertheless

I think I might throw a touch of Lestat in there without the vampirism...or maybe save that for later.
