Title: VENGER CON
Post by: VengerSatanis on November 30, 2021, 10:13:30 AM

A few people have asked me where Venger Con (July 2022 in Madison, WI) attendees can talk about what they want to run, what other people are running, and other coordination, logistic stuff.  So, I've decided to create a dedicated thread here (assuming that's ok with the admins / mods).

For starters, I'm personally going to be running a number of games each convention day (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)... most of them set in Cha'alt.  I'll also be running short one-hour workshops in the morning to start each day with something positive and useful.

While I prefer OSR, old-school, and traditional RPGs, I'm not going to be the gaming police at the con.  Just know that the vast majority of people attending Venger Con will also be focused on actual tabletop RPGs, not board or card games.  Also, that Apocalypse World Thirsty Lesbian Story-Game stuff will be ridiculed mercilessly.

Thanks,

VS

Would love to run Killshot at VengerCon someday. Not next year as I doubt I'll have much time off work, but maybe 2023. Killshot won't get me ridiculed, will it? ;)

Wouldn't relentless ridicule be something that, from your own rules, gets them asked to leave?

No, because at Venger Con you're allowed to ridicule things that are inherently ridiculous.

Besides ridicule being the only response for the left's idiocy it was the calls for not ridiculing them because respect, tolerance, etc that allowed them to infect every corner of the internet.

Mock them, laugh at them until they either get smart, shut the fuck up or go to hell.

My friend and I are going to attend.  We were planning on going to Gary Con, but we aren't flying  1500 miles (from two different directions!) just to yell through a mask for 3 days.

I'd love to run a game!

Whoops! I thought you developed Killshot. Got you mixed up with The Warden. Killshot is a pretty cool RPG where you play as hired assassins. Nice, clean and simple system. Runs like a heist game.

Nope, not me.  I'd be interested in trying that relatively new Bounty Hunter RPG that uses an action economy.

KF's basically a gossip forum, discussing weirdies on the Internet and mocking them.

My guess is that Tubesnake is on there and is trying to stir up some drama.

A forum where they dox controversial people on the internet, and then exhaustively dredge up every negative personal detail they can find.

I looked up Venger's thread. It's incredibly mild and tame compared to their usual hit pieces. Basically just says he's a guy with an edgelord persona who had some issues with commitment, but then says he seems to be raising his kids fairly well. It's nothingsauce.

Yeah, I saw.  Thank you?  It's amazing how they got some stuff right on the nose and other stuff they're way off base.  Plus, consumerism and conservatism bad (like wokes), but also calling people fags and condemning woke Star Wars (like the usual living in their parents' basement folks).

Anyway, I'm going to keep doing my thing...

If they really wanted the whole story, they could have just asked.  Yeah, I don't understand that whole vibe.  It's weird.  If I didn't like something, I would not waste hours of my time exhaustively investigating it... but then not even get that right.  Lol

Trying to get this thread back on topic, yes, I'd like to do that.  Or at least some kind of transcript of what was said.

I'm not altogether sure why (beyond mere self-confidence), but I firmly believe that Venger Con will revolutionize the art of Game Mastering, perhaps roleplaying itself.  A kind of forced evolution.

My advice, if you want it:

Either ignore it, or pop in with an account and say, 'Hey guys, if you want to ask me questions I'm right here!'.

And then laugh it off while planning VengerCon :D

I have a friend coming from PA, and this will be his first con experience.

Do you have any idea when we will be able to sign up to play/run games? My goal is to run a game for Venger ;D. Having a smaller con has some great benefits, but it might be harder to get pick up games.

Are you going to try to get any vendors?

Cool.  This thread is the place to feel things out and suggest games, test the waters, and get feedback before officially submitting what you want to run in January.  Once I have all those games in place, I'll open it up for attendees to sign-up for the games submitted in March.

I will try to make myself available to everyone who either wants me to run a game for them and/or wants me as a player in their game.

I'm sure pick-up games will happen.  Everything is secondary to fun.  I'm not the bureaucratic type, so there won't be much red tape getting in our way.

Attendees who have their own wares will get space to show them off and sell them.  But there won't be an entire dealer's room full of vendors.  Every other gaming con has that.  Venger Con will focus on our gaming past, present, and evolution.

BTW, sorry I've been MIA the last 2 or 3 weeks.  All my focus has been going into the new Cha'alt book.  But now that the manuscript is complete (more or less), I can start putting together a program schedule for games.  Although, we still need more attendees - so, grab your ticket(s) today!

Yeah, I'm trying to bring back that old-school shit.  It's going to look and feel bizarre, when compared to contemporary gaming cons.  No matter what WoTC's numbers are, nor what nonsense they're trying to pull with 5e, there are still plenty of OSR and traditional folks who game and want to celebrate that awesomeness!

I honestly don't understand what Wizards are trying to get at. Rewriting in character books seems utterly pointless. They should just move on and keep putting out actual new content. Like the much delayed Psionics rules.

Rather than expecting games to end early, why not make a 30 min gap? So 10a-2p and 2:30p-6:30p? It gives people time to move about, socialize, eat, and/or excrete (in the appropriate places) between games.

I'll think about it.  My first thought is what about 2 hour games?  They probably don't need a 30 minute break in between.  I know there won't be many of those.  If 2:30 goes to 6:30, then the next game would be 7 - 10?  That's an hour cut off from that session... though, that could work for some games.

Maybe I'll put it to a vote when the con gets closer.

Thanks for the feedback, hoss!

I don't know what is funnier, this comment, or the fact that vengers actual customers are ACTUALLY stupid enough to think that the tweet was anything other than a joke. We all know that he can't sell his products anywhere reputable or whose owner knows how to use a search engine to look up an author who has been literally begging to stock his books.

Schedule so far... (6 players for each game, sessions should end 10 - 15 minutes early to make sure folks can get to their next game without being late)

My schedule has opened up so I'll probably be able to attend.  Is there any way to see availability of slots for specific games?

I attended VengerCon and I am happy to report it was a solid weekend of gaming.

Everyone was laid back and focused on the games. Every morning we had the chance to chat and eat breakfast and drink coffee etc. The location was conveniently located near several restaurants but the hotel bar wasn’t bad either.

We had between 12-18 folks with 2-4 tables going at all times. Really didn’t slow down until Sunday morning.

I was able to meet new friends and even bumped into someone I met at North Texas RPG Con the year before, which was a pleasant surprise.

Venger was approachable and a hoot to play with in his gonzo Cha’alt games, which is best enjoyed by not taking things too seriously.

Other games I played: Conan RPG, Lamentations of the Flame Princess, BECMI D&D, Crimson Dragon Slayer d20, and I ran AD&D 1e. Other games I was aware of included DCC, Crawlspace, and at least one new RPG (Dream of the Dragon by Ivan Richmond).

I’ll be back for VengerCon II!

I don't really like large crowds, and at a larger gaming con I wouldn't be gaming with 99% of the people there anyway, so this actually sounds ideal.

What?  Gaming focused?!  No “celebrities?!”  And next you will tell me the guests were actual gamers!

When I lay down 100 bucks I am hoping for cronies of 5e authors who are former porn stars with borderline personality disorder and woke ass mods (I.e. 1000s!) of players!  I mean they don’t really have to like games and shit or know how to play or want to learn how to play—-they just have to want to create stories that validate their modern day view of stuff.  What a joke this was!

This was my first convention, and I'll be going back for the next one.  Everyopne I talked to was really cool.  I ended up playing in several games that I wasn't origninally planning to attend and I had a blast!  I was involved in two TPKs, which were a lot of fun in their own right.  I even enjopyed the Cha'alt sessions though I'm not normally into gonzo.  I liked it well enough to buy a hardcover of the first Cha'alt book, which I will mine for ideas and might even run as a one-shot or two.

This really took me back to the days when we'd play all weekend, stopping only for food and sleep.

In all seriousness... yes, it was a fun time.  I didn't know exactly what to expect since this was my first time organizing an RPG convention.  I'm signing paperwork later today for next year's shindig.  Will officially announce that either Monday or Tuesday on my blog.

Whatever it is, I'd prefer rules-light games.  I do not want to spend the first quarter of the session learning a whole bunch of new rules - half of which probably won't even come into play.

Ghostbusters, Paranoia, Call of Cthulhu, Amber Diceless Roleplaying, Star Wars D6, Vampire: The Masquerade (1st edition), Toon, etc.

I haven't played any of those, though I did own the original Torg box for a while.  I couldn't find anyone interested so just read the contents.  I would like to try Pendragon at some point, the flaws and virtues system sounds interesting.
