This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Value of RPGs as entertainment, per pound

Or kilo.

Just moved this weekend, and good lord but boxes of RPGs are heavy.  Heavier than the exact same boxes filled with books (hardcover or paperback), video games or CDs.  RPG books just seem denser.

Do RPGs use some kind of heavier paper?  Or am I just imagining it?
Not as dumb as I look, sound, or best testing indicates.  Awful close, though.

They're larger. That means there's fewer total books and less space between them.

Plus, as an RPGer, one would presume you have a vivid imagination.

Truth be told, it may be an issue of perception. It is nigh - impossible to weight things using human hands.
Furthermore, I consider that  This is Why We Don\'t Like You thread should be closed

Assuming your non-RPG books are mass-market paperbacks, then yes, most RPGs do tend to use a heavier weight of paper.
D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

RPG books weigh more in a standard gravity field because they are filled with fun.

All that space in the electron cloud around the atoms? Not empty. Full of fun.

It is speculated by scientists that a pseudo-Casimer Effect is acting upon RPG books to bring fun out of the quantum foam inside.
"Meh."

My calculus books were not filled with fun. In fact, why are they even heavier than a single facial tissue?
Just make your fuckin\' guy and roll the dice, you pricks. Focus on what\'s interesting, not what gives you the biggest randomly generated virtual penis.  -- J Arcane

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Haha, theory debunked!

To answer the OP simple common sense provides the answer.  RPGs use heavier paper stock and fit tightly together.  If you have a box of rpgs you might as well be trying to lift a pine log of equivalent size.

I thought this thread was going in the direction of hours of entertainment per dollar spent when compared to other hobbies.

That, too.  RPGs are great value no matter what the measurement.

Heck, even moving them is fun - trying to remember what's in each box, thinking of campaigns to run once they're unpacked, imagining all the rippling muscles I must be building from all this heavy lifting...

I really can't think of a better hobby than gaming.  I just love it.
