This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Using the Gaean Reach rpg with Traveller

Planet Algol

Just got TGR and I quite like it,  anyone have any thoughts about using it with Traveller?
Yeah, but who gives a fuck? You? Jibba?

Well congrats. No one else gives a shit, so your arguments are a waste of breath.

The Butcher

No idea, but what's it like?

What system does it use, and how does it measure up as a resource for the setting?

I guess it's kinda story games?  Maybe? But I want to run it as is.

It uses a variant of the gumshoe system with stuff from the latest edition of the dying earth rpg.

It's a great resource for the system aside for, and with the system and paradigm it operates under it totally makes sense, but it doesn't have any star maps in the core book or the gazetteer. And that's one of the major reasons I bought it, for maps of the setting to use with Traveller.

It's hidden in the pelgrane press webstore. Under gumshoe system print products. But you get a PDF with purchase of the hardcopy.

So what stuff does the gazetteer cover then? Is it just descriptions of planets? Does it cover flora and fauna? Or NPCs? I've got the rulebook but I've been on the fence about getting the gazetteer.

Ephemerer

Do you have Ashen Stars? It has a lot parts to steal.

It has solid spaceship rules, complete with combat rules that give every member of the crew something to actually do.It has good upkeep rules too. Spaceship components, fancy equipment and cyberwear all needs to be maintained if you want it to keep functioning. You need to keep making money or sink, which feels very Traveller to me.

You may or may not want to use the reputation rules. The basic idea of the game is that it is set in a darker Star Trek-like universe, (but without teleporters). The Federation analogue has been crippled in a war and has had to outsource patrolling to licensed freelancers (the PCs). Basically, you have PC parties having to handle what the Enterprise used to handle.

The basic tension of the game is altruism vs. pragmatism. Being big damn heroes working from the goodness of your hearts boosts your reputation, but sometimes you need to be cold-hearted to make enough money to keep your ship going to be able to help people at all.

The game covers rules for getting jobs, with downtime between jobs meaning that you are just bleeding upkeep costs for while.

The GUMSHOE system works pretty well for it, as it works from the perspective that most Star Trek episodes are basically mysteries with the players needing to figure out what's going on with the anomaly/planet of the week the uncovering some kind of meaningful choice they need to make about how to deal with it.

It's by no means Traveller, but it has a lot parts that you can use for it. Using it with the Skullduggery parts in Gaean Reach could make for a really fun Port of Call type adventure.

Would you care, Planet Algol, making a short review of the Gaean Reach, please ? I'm curious about this game.

And I also concurr with Ephemer about stealing ideas from the Ashen Stars setting, which I find quite cool and enjoyable.
