Has anyone played True20 yet?  I'm thinking about it for my next game, but want to hear actual playtested reviews.

I believe it was initially used as the rule system to support BlueRose but was so popular that Green Ronin decided to sell the rule system separately from the setting.

I also think (don't quote me) that Green Ronin has a number of settings using the rule system coming out this year.

Hope that helps some.  Someone please correct me if I've made misstatements here.  I don't want to lead anyone astray.

Got it, haven't played.  Lack of time and interest, locally.

Will be looking for True20 games when the GenCon schedule comes out.

I'm reading the Mutants and Masterminds book, and it uses a similar system. I think it came out before Blue Rose, but they both use the same d20-only system, and both are from Green Ronin.

The system uses a damage save instead of hp, the same as Mutants and Masterminds.  There are 3 general classes: an expert, warrior, and mage.  The magic system is skill based, very similar to the Psychics Handbook (not surprising since both are by Steve Kenson).  Skills are simplified: at character creation, you pick your skills and have them at your level from then on.

I'm not sure if I could play D&D without hit points but I'd like to try the magic system.

I'm pretty sure M&M has an alternate rule for using hit points, but I have not looked at it yet. Not sure how easy it would be to apply to fantasy True20.

As I understand it, M&M 1st ed had alternate rules for hp in the core book. In 2nd ed, they removed most of the optional rules (including hp) from the core book, and are putting them in the "Mastermind's Manual" or something like that.

That explains it. I have the 1st ed., but I just picked it up. My kids won't know or care if we are playing 1st or 2d ed.

I have Blue Rose, and the system is True 20. Haven't played it. It is, indeed, a stripped down d20. It uses the "generic classes" from Unearthed Arcana, and the combat system is much less involved. There are going to be a number of settings produced for it, it looks like. I think they're letting other publishers play in their sandbox.

True20 is the shit. It is a total redesign and streamlining of D20, and working with it isn't like battering your head against a brick wall. I'm thinking of making it my primary game from here on out since regular D20 converts over so easily.

The only thing about it that I would change is I would use hit points instead of the system they have, but otherwise, it's a thing of beauty.

True20 is OGL. It would pretty much have to be since it's a modified version of D20. The True20 logo is not OGL. You have to go through Green Ronin if you want that to appear on your book, and Green Ronin is pretty tight with the license to use it.
