[True20] Two New Powers: Mineral & Crystal Shaping
« on: March 21, 2006, 02:21:12 AM »
My first two Powers for True20. Please let me know what you all think of them.:)

Mineral Shaping
Fatiguing
This power enables the spellcaster to channel forth elemental energy from the elemental plane of Mineral. You can use Mineral Shaping to summon forth minerals and metals to produce an array of effects:
Detect Minerals & Metals: You can divine the location of a single type of ore or mineral deposit per casting. Metal Shape: You can form an existing piece of non-magical metal into any shape that suits your purpose. For example, the caster can fashion a metal weapon, a special trap-door, or a crude idol. While metal coffers can be thus formed, metal doors made, and so on the fineness of detail is not great; it is crude but functional. Nothing can be created with moving parts.
Rock Door: You can pass through solid stone as though it was an open door. The jump can be made through any stone surface (not sand or soil), and must also end at a stone surface. Walls can be used, as can floors and ceilings. You can also enter a large rock and reappear through another sizeable rock in the distance. The size of stone so entered must be approximately the size of the caster or greater. It takes a full-round action to make the journey, and you can reappear through any stone surface within line of sight from the point of the spell’s casting (or simply "jump" through a rock wall). If the rock is more than 20 feet thick, it may not be passed through using this Power.

Crystal Shaping
Fatiguing
Prerequisite: Mineral Shaping
This power enables the spellcaster to manipulate crystals to create fantastic effects.
Crystallomancy: This spell causes a clear or translucent crystalline gemstone to serve as a scrying device. The gemstone becomes similar to a crystal ball. The stone holds these properties for 1 hour, during which time it adds a +5 to Scrying checks made while using the stone. If used in conjunction with an actual crystal ball, it adds a +10 to Scrying checks.
Crystal of Absorption: You take a small crystal and imbue it with magical power so it floats near you. The next time you are the target of a Power that is cast at or below your level, the attack is absorbed in full by the Crystal, which then disappears. If the Power is above your own level, the Crystal of Absorption is dispelled and the spell affects you normally. Only one Crystal of Absorption can be active at any one time, and creating it is a full-round action.
Crystal Prison: This spell causes the body of the target to be encased in rapidly-growing crystals. It takes a full-round action for this spell to complete the entrapment of the target. The caster can “hold” the target in this crystal prison for as long as he concentrates. The target takes no damage, but is unable to see or hear clearly while so entombed. Everything looks blurred and sounds are so wildly distorted as to be unrecognizable. While this spell causes no direct damage to the target, the target is basically helpless while trapped in the crystal, and anything that shatters the crystal (Toughness 0) will also deal damage to the trapped target.

** Edited to clarify Crystal Prison and replace Reverse Gravity with Rock Door.

Nice.

I don't associate gravity reversal with minerals.  How about ability to put a hole through an object like passwall or the ability to move through rock like a xorn?

The description makes it sound like the person crystalizes, but the effects sound like crystals form around the person.  The latter sounds more reasonable - holds them without damage.

How about something like Crystal Form:  a liquid or amorphous creature (water elemental, ooze, not just something with a lot of water like a person) takes D8 pts of damage per caster level (Fort save for  half).  If the creature dies, their body is transformed into a crystal statue.  Decently powerful but highly specialized.

Hey, thanks! :)

The Plane of Mineral is all about pure metals, stone and gems. I guess I was referring more to magnetism than gravity. Hmm...

That's a great idea, and I think it's probably more appropriate than Reverse Gravity (which could be used as a stand-alone Power). I think I'll use that. :)

The crystals do form around the person. I'll clarify that in the description.

These Shaping Powers for True20 are set up a bit differently from D20 spells. You can select any of these at 1st level, so they cannot be too powerful (especially with regards to damage) and need to be sufficiently broad to cover a wide range of uses, while still fitting the description. Damage-causing uses are covered by the Elemental Strike Power, which does a scalable amount of damage and can be tailored to any element. If you choose Elemental Strike for the Fire Shaping power, for example, you can declare your Elemental Strike is a fireball, a jet of flame, a wave of heat... whatever, as it will conform to the set damage and range according to your caster level.

Interesting.  I'll need to see more about True20 powers when I get the chance.  Right now, I have no idea whether the power levels are appropriate, but they both seem neat.  :)

BTW, True20 does not have a "Polymorph Other" spell, but I am going to make one for my setting, as it's a staple of magical myth. It will be a stand-alone spell that can transform others into basic animals (just like Polymorph Self, something else I'll have to create). An interesting variant, similar to your idea, would be the ability to Polymorph into elementals, assuming you have both the appropriate Polymorph spell and Elemental Shaping Spell. I probably wouldn't have it cause damage, but I would make the transformation last a long time, maybe even permanently or until dispelled. Being transformed into a crystal statue might be quite the drag if there's no one with a Dispel Power handy.:D Also, imagine the mayhem of Polymorphing an enemy into a fire elemental, in the middle of camp at night, by the tents. :D

This is not a "bump", honest. :p  I could not use the "edit" on the initial post for some reason. I got some tips and clarified the language and added DC checks to some of the uses. I think this will do it.;)

Mineral Shaping
Fatiguing
This power enables the adept to channel forth elemental energy from the elemental plane of Mineral. You can use Mineral Shaping to summon forth minerals and metals to produce an array of effects:
Detect Minerals & Metals: You can divine the location of a single type of ore or mineral deposit per casting. You detect any instances of the mineral or ore in question within 20 feet + 5 per level. This Power is centered on you, and moves with you for the duration (1 round per caster level).
Metal Shape (DC 15): You can form an existing piece of non-magical metal into any shape that suits your purpose. For example, the adept can fashion a metal weapon, a special trap-door, or a crude idol.
The size of stone so entered must be approximately the size of the adept or greater. It takes a full-round action to make the journey, and you can reappear through any stone surface within line of sight from the point of the Power's casting (or simply "jump" through a rock wall). If the rock is more than 20 feet thick, it may not be passed through using this Power.

***EDIT - Now the edit function works on the first post. Must have been a glitch on my end.
