Traveller5 has arrived!

It has finally come in the mail! FEAR ME!

At 650+ pages, it makes my Pathfinder Core Rules look small. Whether or not it can stop a bullet will be determined soon along with a review.

(Sorry for the shaky cam, but all I have is a phone camera.)

Would love to see some interior pics, and a mini review/first impression.

First impression?

Stuff has been changed from the playtest files I had.

This is not an introductory game for people new to tabletop RPGs. This was written for people who have not just been playing tabletop RPGs for a long time, but for people who have been playing Traveller for a long time. There is no way this game could be for new or casual Players.

Holy fucking shit this book is so densely packed with information that it may take me a month or two to digest it all.

There is a dedication to Gary Gygax in the front on a page commemorating Absent Friends, thanking him. I think that shows a lot of class.

Check the reviews and Traveller forums first before you do that.

Oh, they're just eviscerating it on the Citizens of the Imperium forum. I was probably never going to get T5, being happy with CT/MongTrav, but these are hardcore, first-in type supporters, who are calling it an absolute mess.

I hope that's not the case, but it has not been a rosy reception thus far. Looking forward to your thoughts, Jeff!

It is a mess, sadly. I was more thrilled with the swag that came with T5 (dice, TAS card, Patent of Nobility, coins) than I was with T5.

I am a long time beta tester. The main issue is that it is a toolkit ... period.

It has very little in the way of prepared content instead of a huge list of Guns it gives you the ability to make your own guns. The same for the rest of the different subsystems.

It perhaps most closely related to T4.

If you want something playable out of the box get MongTrav if you want the ultimate Traveller get T5.

There are a few Traveller 5 die-hards that insist on going down with the ship.  They bought tickets, knowing the ship would sink.

And there are some shitheads who have crapped all over every edition of Traveller since Megatraveller who post their bile on every internet forum thread on T5 they can find.  Nobody hates on Traveller like Traveller fans.

And yes T5 has a lot of rough edges.  And yes, Marc has taken his sweet time getting the books out.  I got my disc fairly quickly but wound up buying a book from my distributor rather than waiting for the one I ordered once I'd seen the disc.

Because the beta didn't leave me with much hope for T5.  And indeed many of my fears were met.  Even so, if you think T5 is a mess you should have seen the beta versions.

And I'm excited by T5.  I like the character creation and I like the dice mechanic and I like the makers.  Combat still bugs me but at least you can figure out how it works which is more than I could say for any of the playtest files.  Utterly incomprehensible rather than vague and weird like the current version.  But then I'm a rare T4 fan and T5 is very much a development on T4.  Personally it would have been better if it had been more like T4.  The core was lighter and I think that would go a long way towards making T5 more popular.  Also, it's easier to edit a smaller book and get it right.

Estar has the right of it and my thinking so far tracks with his. Traveller5 is an immense toolkit that allows you to build up a setting with as much detail as you can stand. If you want something you can run immediately, Mongoose Traveller or Classic Traveller is for you. Get Traveller5 if you like to do a lot of tinkering with your game.

I collect the tears of your outrage and nightly drink them from a crystal goblet to toast the glory of Traveller5.

A couple of questions from a long-time Classic Trav (and more recently, MongTrav) player re: T5:

-How is the overall organization of the product?

-How is the editing?

-For chargen and gameplay, are there sections summing up all the steps needed (say, for personal combat or start-to-finish character creation)?

I'm still reading through this, so I will defer and say that I cannot give solid responses yet.

There are step-by-step cookbook style checklists for all "maker" systems in the book, along with their output examples. In fact, those take up most of the text pages.

You mentioned T4, are these maker systems in T5 similar to Fire, Fusion, Steel?  I could see a book hitting 700 pages with that concept in the core, if so.  Edit: Oh yes, how specific are these maker systems tied to the Third Imperium setting?
Any comment I add to forum is from complete boredom.

In one sentence, can anyone tell me if it is worth playing the new T5 over the older T1 LBBs? I have people around with both and I am interested.
I play these games to be entertained... I don't want to see games about rape, sodomy and drug addiction... I can get all that at home.
