This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Hopes are, that we are neither alone, nor shackled to this planet:

I can imagine all kinds of Trav stuff going on with that info alone.
Generation Ships, Ramjets, Aliens (which are highly probable if the info is confirmed).

Also look how close it is:

It's only a matter of time now until we bump into the imperium.

Well, it will be a long while yet. The only drive we are capable of making that could get a colony ship there is an Orion drive, and no-one is going to build it.

You know, call me naive but I have always been confident earth-like worlds existed. I just wasn't so sure we would find them. In all the billions of worlds out there, the odds would seem to favor. However, it does feel good to read this news.

I'm with you Bill. With all the starts out there, there has to be one that will supports a planet like ours.

And it´s only 20 lightyears away!

We don't know if it has liquid water though, but yes, it is indeed incredibly cool.

And only 20 light years, which implies they may be quite common.

From the temperatures estimated, 0 to 40 C, if there is any water at all, it should be liquid somewhere on the planet. I think it's a safe bet. There may not be a lot of water, but there is probably some.

Dr Rotwang!

Bad-ass.

EDIT: Dude I'm training at work today and I were looking at the news item and he said he'd heard that 581 c or whatever they're calling it is a heavy world with more than 1G.  Anyone?

One of the exoplanet guys whose work I follow on the net suspects that the world in question might have oceans with liquid water totalling an earth mass or more.  Unless his very-credible-in-the-field pet theory about planet formation is wrong, in which case a waterless rock is the most likely configuration.

From CNN:

The new planet is about five times heavier than Earth, and gravity there would be 1.6 times as strong as Earth's.

Given the abundance of water in our solar system, the odds of there being some liquid water are probably pretty high.
