This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Traveller Preference: OTU or Original Setting?

(I posted this on TBP and the MongTrav forum, but I'm interested in getting as many opinions as possible)

Adamant has been thinking of dipping our proverbial toes into Traveller support, via Mongoose's open license, and it got me thinking about my own past history with the game. I've probably only played Traveller in the default "Traveller Universe" (Third Imperium, mostly) a couple of times. The rest of the times I've played the game, it's been emulating some well-known SF universe (I've done Trek, BSG and Firefly), or in an original universe of the GM's creation.

So, that begs the question: What do people really prefer? If I'm going to do Traveller support, should I do generic, plug-and-play stuff that can be slotted into a house campaign (since the OTU is off-limits, so generic is essentially the "core universe" option), or should I come up with a groove-tastic original SF universe, and set the projects there?

Thoughts? Opinions?

GMSkarka,

You mmight run into some confusion and problems because therew are some peple  (like me) that cinsider the GURPS:TRAVELLER timeline the 'official' continuation of the original. Its the only version that makes sense to me.

Around the time of the silly Virus/Assasination/Mega-death/Rebellion stuff - GDW lost me as a customer.

To me, Classic TRAV, Mongoose TRAV and GURPS: TRAVELLER are all techincally the same universe.  Of the three , classic/GDW and Mongoose have mostly the game mechanics.

You know what I really wanted ?

Deckplans of various star port "High Ports' and space station, more 'downport' maps,  spacer tavern layouts and blueprints - that kind of thing. The sort of stuff that can be used witrh any version of TRAVELLER. (Hexagon version of the maps if possible...at 1 yard = a hex would help too)

That second one.  People can get all the canon and 'standard Traveller' stuff they need over at CotI.  This is an opportunity to stretch the rules and the universe a bit and see where it can go.

I'd say both - always love little fiddly bits that can be used anywhere, and always willing to check out another SF setting or three.

I agree with Werekoala, but with this caveat. If you do generic, plug-and-play stuff, just have a section in the back which tells Mongoose Traveller fans how to drop that into the Foreven Sector and you have covered both approaches with one product. This could even extend to using the same product as generic, but with notes in the back showing how it can be incorporated into either the Foreven Sector or your own unique campaign setting. Of course, products written specifically for your own campaign setting will fit smoother than those not, but this is already something you know.

Hope that helps.

You should do non-"canon" stuff because all the bitter non-gamers sitting in their basements arguing about it will scream blue murder and rubbish you everywhere, thus giving you wide exposure and free publicity and ensuring marvellous success for your products.

:D

Plus, as others said, we have enough of that old setting shit already. Let's have some new and interesting setting shit.
