This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I took at look at Orbital from Zozer Games after Jeff mentioned it.  It looks pretty cool.  It eliminates the couple of handwavium things the OTU always gets dinged on, and goes for realistic Solar System Sci-Fi.

Anyone else have it or try it?

Holy crap. Drop in mobile suits, and you have the One Year War from Mobile Suit Gundam.

Once you get past the Newtypes and the Beam Sabers, MS Gundam is a very hard SF setting. No artificial gravity,no FTL, everyone uses handguns, people live on O'Neill cylinders.

Simulation is narrative
Storygames are RPGs

I have it, have read it, but have not yet played it. I like it as well. Enough that I bought everything out for it so far. It would work really well as a near future mystery/espionage setting perfect or playing games modeled after stuff like the movie Outland. Very well done setting IMO, I'd recommend it. If I can find time (not likely until after Thursday), I'l try to go into more detail.

Yes, once you drop half the setting (including the mecha), Mobile Suit Gundam is very hard SF. However, it still does not fit the setting for Orbital. If you want Gundam, try Jovian Chronicles or Mekton (and if you look closely, you'll find some of the writers for those currently writing for Mongoose Traveller).

If Orbital was to match any anime/manga, it would be Planetes.

This is pretty much how I feel as well. I was reluctant at first, but after buying and reading Orbital, I wanted everything associated with it. It is that good.

I had run across this before Jeff mentioned it. Looks pretty sweet. If I only had more loot for gaming stuff....

Well, that shoots down one project I was going to work on for StarCluster. Scratch the "In The Beginning" setting! I set it aside to work on Volant and Lowell Was Right!, and now that window has shut. Fuck!

I have a lot of Robert Zubrin books about Mars.  And Paul's Outpost for Mongoose Traveller fits right in that theme.  Outpost adds alien artifacts on Mars as a story hook all it's own.  It also adds three explorer careers, and changes the navy career since here is no jump drive technology.  I have not role-played with Outpost yet, but I already like the game a hell of a lot better than 2300 for Mongoose.

When I see "Orbital" I think Downbelow Station.
Not sure it would be a good generic gaming setting but you could replace "Hisa" with degenerate Earthlings (active pandemic survivors) as a spin.

You really need to read the setting. It isn't that, but it still is good.
