This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Tracy Hickman - Interview with a Grognard

From those who knew Tracy and the glory days of TSR of the mid to late 80s, this shouldn't be news.  Those days were pretty wild, and Tracy could be a real horndawg away from home, especially after he got into the bourbon.  For my part I did a lot of hanging out with Anthony Pryor.  He's a great writer, and taught me a lot of things.  Tracy was the best when he got down to it.  The man had a beautiful mind for game design.  Hell, he wrote most of the DL modules singlehanded.  Now he and I will both agree that Marge Weis was better at sketching out characters, but when it came to structure and design it had to be Tracy.  He was an idea man and had great self-discipline and work ethic.  He kept some of the best OD&D modules going.  Compared to Gary and Dave, he was that much more focused and commercial.  But all the work caused him a whole heap of stress.  Laura was raising revolution 'cause she hardly got to see him and when they did, the maritals just wasn't right.  Most of us grognards got challenged in the '80s by being pulled in all directions, and then some.  I remember Doug Niles had a breakdown in a Lake Geneva bar once.  He just bawled his eyes out all night long. It was nothing a couple of fifths of Seagram's couldn't solve, but he was really under the gun.

Boy, I was slinging dice before you knowed how to read.

Quote from: Larsdangly;945688I'm not sure why he bothered. This site is basically troll proof - a great advantage of a social contract where no one gives a flying fuck what you say.

He's got off to a rookie start. Now, we expect more story, rather than the typical troll blathering.

Gronan of Simmerya

Wake me up when he figures out that "80s" and "OD&D" have nothing to do with each other.
You should go to GaryCon.  Period.

The rules can\'t cure stupid, and the rules can\'t cure asshole.

Yeah, Tracy Hickman "Kept some of the best OD&D modules going."  Uh, yeah.

The riff could be entertaining, but it's obviously someone too ignorant to know the topic, and too bitter to really deliver biting satire.

Im pretty sure some people were still playing OD&D in the 80s?

Now "Interview with Vampire" gets a whole new meaning. Although some would say that was part of the movie since the beginning.

The unresolved question is, why should we care whether you fucked your old gaming buddy, even if we were to assume you actually knew him?

Boy, Tracy was a standard bearer for the spirit of OD&D I tell you what. He defended the dungeon crawl over hell and high water when that boy Ed Greenwood thought that he could have his own way with just about any franchise. You see, Ed was a pervert. The moment you showed him a piece of strange, he'd get chubbed and need to go take care of hisself. Tracy always hated Forgotten Realms - he thought it was a crock of shit.  He got roped into writing the DL modules for the mass market, but he was just about the best damn DM out there for a grognard. You see, you gotta separate a man's professional life from his personal preferences.  Anthony Pryor who's still a good friend of mine - we hit up from time to time at the Ripcord down Dallas way - always used to say that Tracy had a grognard's soul. Now if you weathered hardcore grogs really want to catch up with the folks who've been slinging dice since the 70s, you need to get down to the Dallas Eagle.  They do mighty good ribs and onion rings.

Voros

I guess some are easily amused. This doesn't even make much sense as satire as Hickman and Pryor are hardly the epitome of grognards.

Boy, this is gaming history.  Do you know how match strange you could get in the Gen Con jakes back in the early 80s?  Lots of spotty, nervous, nerdy dudes looking for any which way to bust a nut.  You just brought your own Crisco, and there was a good time to be had between gaming and eating ribs.
