Quote from: dpmcalisterAnyway, I'm not convinced about it yet. The Captain Jack we're seeing in Torchwood is different to the one portrayed in the Doctor Who episodes and I'm not sure I like the new portrayal.
Well the big difference between Captain Jack in Dr. Who and in Torchwood is that he was killed by the Daleks then resurrected by Rose during her attack of godesshood at the end of the Eccleston series. And now he has his own resurrection power to boot. That's an experience that could change a guy y'know. ;)

He acts differently too. He's a lot more serious. It probably comes from being immortal and intent on saving Earth from something huge that happens.

Quote from: RPGPunditSo anyways, what system would you use?

DitV with the madness meters from UA :D

Seriously, Cinematic Unisystem fits well (particularly for the differing character power levels) or possibly nWoD (because my player group loves it)

Quote from: RPGPunditBTW, watched ep. 3. It was better than 1 & 2; I'm not totally there yet, but its growing on me.

The actor playing Captain Jack just isn't good enough to carry a show.  It's the same problem that Angel had.  I know they're still feeling their way with this, but it's got serious problems.
Spoiler
The guy could have caused the destruction of the human race, has threatens to kill Jack and yet at the end of the episode is back working for Torchwood as if nothing had happened.  A wasted episode - a good potentially concept ruined because they didn't have the guts to do something original with it

Yeah that episode could have done with being later in the season with more repercussions. It was too close to Suzie's suicide departure to lose another cast member, you can't have them dropping like flies.
Spoiler
If you've got cyber(wo)men as episode 4, what are you going to have as the climax to the season? Still remember threatening Captain Jack with a gun probably isn't going to upset him as much as someone who is mortal.

If I wanted to play this or UNIT I'd give Time Lord a try, though likely swapping out the die mechanic with a more traditional stat+skill roll high task system. Already has a lot of Dr. Who characters and species statted out and there's a free version if you can't find the OOP Virgin Books book.

Works better with chargen rules from online supplements, esp. for a non-Time Lord+Companions game. Also see:

I'd use Top Secret/S.I., but that's my system of choice for just about everything now :D

Edit: OK, just watched the (4th? Cyberwoman) episode. What complete and utter tripe!

Ah yes... that last episode.

"YOU'RE THE REAL MONSTER HERE JACK!"
"Yes, you just said that and it had no more impact the seconde time"

Or indeed...

"A Cyberwoman... what do we do?"
"Mooch around for half an hour unconvincingly because the writer can't do action?"
"Sounds good... ooh look a Pterodactyle, that doesn't completely shatter the tone.  Not at all."

Oh good, it's not just me then (and sorry, but I like the pterosaur)

I think that the problems with this show can be summed up in one sentence: it doesn't know if it wants to be British or American

Captain Jack is rubbish.

They should draft in one of the blokes from Life on Mars....

Torchwood operates under a 1 episode in 2 rule.

Episode 1 was I thought quite good, episode 2 was a bit shite, episode 3 was ok, episode 4 with the cyberwoman was awful, last night's episode was quite good.

I may have the episode numbers mixed up there, but I think it has a 50% hit rate.

It would be nice though to see a bit more humour, most of us I think liked the Captain Jack character for the humour and the swashbuckling aspect he had, neither of which is so far represented much here.

Mr. Analytical

I think Captain Jack works quite well as a comic side-kick, simply because he's so different from the Doctor but as the lead, I'm not sure he has enough about him to carry a whole series.  I also have my doubts about the actor playing him, he's completely unconvincing in those big dramatic scenes.
