This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Shadowrun's Sixth World

Theory of Games

Is this not the best setting?

Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Orks, Trolls, Androids, magic, cybertech, dragons, powerful corporations, intrigue, a helter-skelter government.

It's crazy. As a player you get wild options. As a GM, you get insane setting tools.

What have you done? What are you doing? What do you want to do?

I mean yeah I love it but only certain years of it.  Basically after the Renraku Arcology storyline resolved itself the world went kind of silly.  I think there might be one or two adventures after that that I liked but I can't remember.  It's been a while and whenever I consider prepping a campaign it is always focused on the few years leading up to Brainscan.

Two Crows

Don't forget:

Hackers, Biker Gangs, Punk Rock, 1980's Yuppies, Unbridled Capitalism, Native American tribes ... Oh My!

The original setting had the feel of "Repo Man" meets "WallStreet" meets "RoboCop",  Plus all of the elements of the Hobbit.

If you like kitchen sinks, then yes, it's probably ultimate one.

Biker gangs? The original Seattle Sourcebook had airborne gangs that operated ultralight aircraft and gyrocopters. And those never got mentioned again.

Ummm... RIFTS?

I actually thought it was reasonably well focused within its premise.  Cyberpunk fits, Tolkienish fits, everything else not so much.

And I really love the setting.  The game wasn't bad, either, but the setting really clicked for me.  It probably helps that I quite enjoy Seattle, political stupidity aside.

Point taken - RIFTS is like Shadowrun Square Rooted... no wait it's like Shadowrun^13, that's better.
Also I suppose not Tolkienian but more... Earthdawnish roots, right?

EarthDawn was later, and it was actually set in Shadowrun's distant past.

Yeah, Bikers ("Go-Gangers").

IIRC, they were the antagonist of the very first Shadowrun scenario ever.  Was it called "Food Fight"?  All I remember is it was in a StufferShack, and had random tables for what you shot up in the isles.

EarthDawn was later, and it was actually set in Shadowrun's distant past.

Fasa decided to setup that Earthdawn was Shadowrun history and Shadowrun was it's future with some major NPCs like Harlequin surviving to live in the Shadowrun universe. Then in Fasa infinite 'wisdom" they decided to kill the Earthdawn line to focus on VOR. Create big setup only to nuke the entire project to compete against Games Workshop. They even had a novel where one of the major horrors from Earthdawn showed up in Shadowrun. Instead "nah screw-up lets push our 40k clone".

I agree with OP.  Loved Shadowrun.  Played first edition (with some house rule tweaks) for several years.  So much to work with as a GM.  That was in the 90s I think.  I'm 50 now and I couldn't run it now.  I can't use street names with a straight face at my age.  Have so many great memories and I don't want to ruin in.

Now I've been running Mongoose Traveller for over two years. That's got a lot of design space creativity options too.
