Character generation is easier, outfitting starting characters is easier, and there are no class based talent trees.

The skill list is nicely trimmed down as well.

That said, it's easier to double tap a mook to death with a Lasgun, then it is to headshot them with a sniper rifle, and you track all wounds on a crit chart, which leads to punching people till their head explodes like a grenade.

Do keep in mind that the first beta errata has taken some steps to correct the above issues.

The problem the WH40K RPGs have always had is that they've rolled with this conceit where if you take the "tens" unit of each character's stat you get something approximating wargame stats for them.

The problem being that the wargame is a D6-based thing with few to no mechanics in common with the percentile system that underpins the tabletop RPG, which means that in practice everyone is basically entirely incompetent at their supposed areas of expertise unless the GM remembers to give sizeable bonuses to even baseline tasks.

If the beta starts the process of moving the 40K RPGs away from this weird superstitious need they have to have people's stats aesthetically resemble the wargame stats despite having no mechanical connection to the wargame whatsoever, I think that'd be a grand start.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

The system being used for Star Wars would be a much better fit, imo.

Will you explain more?

I can try.

The dice system for Edge of Empire is much smoother.  If you have say, an Intellect of 3, human average being 2, you have 3 dice you roll for all Intellect based skills, even if you are untrained.  Those are d8, by the way. If you are trained in a skill, you upgrade one or more dice to a d12. Now, you add difficulty die, which are the same type, which can also be upgraded.

But it really comes down to the fact that failure isn't the default assumption.  In Dark Heresy, you are supposed to be a cut above, but in practice you are little better than cannon fodder, trying to eke out whatever bonuses you can out of a situation for a chance of success.
