This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: The Butcher;523670I consider myself a fan of Tékumel, and that woman's post freaks me out too.

It's kind of like people are having themselves a nice Prime Directive thread, and you show up and half your post is in Klingon.

Yeah, well but to many in the hobby, that's the visible face of Tekumel fandom. People who will start talking to you in Tsolyani and tell you how awesome it is to have to read 200 pages of culturewank to play a merchant shoemaker with an unpronounceable name.

That's also, in my opinion, how every single tekumel book ever published was written.  There has never been a "tekumel without the culturewank", much less a "tekumel without the plethora of alien vocabulary".

And that's what bugs me and why I harp on about it, because I think that without those things, Tekumel would be an utterly kick-ass setting.

It is.

I credit the OSR in general, and Jeff Rients in particular, with showing me that Tékumel doesn't have to be all about the culture-wank, and why TSR's EPT is the best Tékumel RPG ever (though I like Swords & Glory/Gardasiyal, and even Tri-Stat Tékumel, as much as the next guy, they just don't feel as engageable, and playable, as the original. Though the S&G setting book makes for a great GM's guide/gazetteer).

I do think that the original EPT would be the best candidate to base a stripped-down tekumel out of, though it doesn't do much to fix the bigger problem which would be presenting the setting in a new way.

Greentongue

If you have not seen "You, too, CAN run Empire of the Petal Throne" then I suggest doing so. It is not yet complete but it is a nice guide as far as it goes.

Hmm, certainly better than the one-page thingy posted here before. It could even be the framework for a re-designing that would actually be approachable.
