This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

TheRPGsite needs to do a Secret Santa Swap.

Or a secret whatever.

Anyway, way back in the mists of time TBP did an RPG swap that was completely blind, you just sent random stuff to a random person and got a random package from them/someone else.

It was awesome, you ended up getting stuff you'd never buy otherwise and stuff you didn't even knew existed. Meanwhile you got to share stuff you picked up at some point with someone else.

Of course because people are terminally fucking lame it changed to a general trading deal. Stupid.

Anyway, we need to do it.

This thread is to plan it out and try and get some volunteers to help organize it.

What do you all think?

I would love something like that.
I have lots of RPG stuff laying about I'll probably never use, but might be of interest to someone else.

I'm not that keen on handing out my address to a random stranger though.

Ladybird

I'd be up for that. Some of us being on different continents is a potential issue, but I'm sure we could work something out (And by that, I mean "just pay the fucking postage charges, seriously").

Instead of a Secret Santa, how about everyone who wants to take part posts the country they live in and something they have up for grabs.

They need to state which continents/countries they're willing to pay postage.

Or if someone outside the postage area really wants something they offer to pay postage.

To take part you need to put something up for offer.

Ladybird

Yeah, but now it's back to trading, and we could have done that anyway. The entire point of a secret santa thing is the surprise.

Yeah, last time I was on an internet Secret Santa thing I was boned because I kept being matched up with skinflint yankees who didn't want to pay the postage.

Let's keep it simple: don't sign up if you don't want to potentially pay postage/courier charges to Bumblefuck, Nowhereland, and if you fail to send your item to your recipient then you don't get to go in on future Secret Santas. I'm frankly not likely to participate unless we take a hard line on this because I've been burned too often before.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

OK, well just keep it simple as warthur has suggested,

If you sign up, it means you accept to pay whatever postage to wherever.
It's not like the postage is going to be THAT expensive anyway.

Piestrio

The overseas shipping is something we would need to address.

One solution would be to ask people when they sign up if they would be willing to ship out of country. That way nobody is surprised when they end up with a recipient in Foreignlandia and is unwilling to follow through.

Or we just have a blanket "you might get someone outside your area, be prepared" policy.

Or something else.

Just an idea.

That's my thinking. It's not like we're expecting people to ship stuff first class with bottle service on the trip. I used to ship 80-100lbs boxed home from Korea (to the states) and I don't think I spent more than 50USD. And I doubt anyone is going to send 100lbs worth of books.

A swell idea, though my choice of RPG books in actual English is somewhat limited.
Furthermore, I consider that  This is Why We Don\'t Like You thread should be closed

Brad

I'm in, but would prefer to be paired up with a European gamer just to see what sorts of weird shit I might get.
It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance.

That's the other organizational question:

Should people be paired so that they are sending stuff to each other or should people just be given a random person so who you send to and who you receive from are different?

Someone could be the recipient of all those involved.
Everyone PMs that person with their email address and location and preference.

They try to match up as beast they can, but everyone accepts whatever the result anyway. That way it won't turn into an organizational nightmare for the organizer.

The Butcher

I'd love to, but international shipping is a bitch.

I'm in, I don't care if it domestic U.S., Europe, Canada, or Australia. I'll ship some gaming goodness there in exchange for a secret Santa gift of comparable value..... Might be via the slowest boat going there though so we should get started early.

P.S. just did a full inventory for insurance purposes... My gaming collection is actually about $25k or so, and I have mostly awesome old school goodness in my collection with just a few modern games.
