This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). The One Spell You Can't Go Without

Some sort of light spell. I've seen one or two that lacked it. Dragon Storm was one.

Some manner of detect traps for those times thieves or equivalent are not present. Or you just want to be extra sure the lock isnt trapped.

Though as allways any spell not in a casters arsenal can possibly exist as a magic item.

Nothing comes to mind as a necessary or required spell. It's all setting and system dependent.

Whether it's making the tip of your staff light up, magically igniting a torch, or creating a glowing sphere that floats around, something that lets you see in dark places.

^This. I don't need Fireball or Mage Hand or Fly or heck, even Invisibility, but damn straight gonna need Light of some kind!

If I see a generic spell list, I'm bored.

I want classics to be missing and cool new spells to be there instead.

I am seriously thinking about retooling the OD&D spell list and NUKING all the classics for a campaign.

With the making of any new RPG, if that's what we are talking about, it almost seems better if they have gutted the classic spells (e.g., fireball, magic missile, etc.) and almost completely removed them or changed them.

Yeah it is cool to have all of the call backs to the older games that you have played, and that can still be seen in the idea behind some of the spells.

However, if you are looking for a magic oriented game and the spells don't behave in a different way, have a different effect, or do anything different, then that sounds like you would much rather just play the game that all of the "classics" come from. Part of playing a new game is experiencing the new mechanics and everything the game has to offer. If a player is looking for the same game with a slightly different skin, it is better to just homebrew something up.

If it doesn't have the spell Sword to Face, I'm out.

:D C'mon, someone had to do it.

Quote from: fearsomepirate;1028913See, that's why I would never play a Harry Potter game. No fireball.

Harry Potter doesn't really have a hard spellcasting system.  Spells tend to succeed or fail according to the needs of the plot.  As much as it's disliked in this forum, I'd say the best system for emulating this would be a (*gasp!*) narrative one like Fate Accelerated.

And in a system like that, I don't see anything wrong with a PC casting "Fireball", even if there's no precedent for it in the books/movies.

For me it's the lack of A single target blast spell at low level.
Not because not having one is wrong but it tends to be signs of one of two things.
1: magic is subtle and for A different type of play then I prefer.
2:  It's A sign of A non player only magic system again not wrong but dosen't fit the style games I like.
