Stuart Robertson, the inventor of one of the more-common known OSR logos, has decided that he's going to threaten legal action on anyone using the Logo with politics he doesn't like.

Fortunately, I will be presenting an alternative that will be available for FREE, for everyone, in perpetuity to use on their OSR designs, complete with the subtitle of "We only care that you game".

This is in fact the kind of White Saviour most of my people don't want "defending" us. I hope he sticks to "defending" transgender people and stays far away from latin@ issues. These "saviors" do more harm than good.

Public Service Announcement: create your own logos or pay someone else to do so, giving you the complete rights. Do not depend on someone else's generosity.

Since he released the logo for use as a branding badge, I doubt he can bring a claim for "association" under Canadian moral rights law. I am also not seeing any possibility of an integrity right claim based on harm to his reputation. A court might decide differently but it would set a huge precedent greatly harming creative commons licencing so I expect the defence would have well funded lawyers from interested parties.

I will have to check the old-school modules and supplements I own to see whether they use the logo or not. I sincerely don't remember if they do. Until now, it has never occurred to me to check either.

Which, I believe, should put Whoisthat Whatshisname's effort into its proper context.

I doubt he'll go the route involving lawyers. Instead, he'll just report people to hosting services like Youtube, Google, or OBS, and try to trick them into dropping the content.

1. The creative commons licence is non revocable.

2. He has no right to TSR's work.

So any copyright claim would be spurious.

It's remarkable seeing the people in that twitter feed agreeing enthusiastically about the terrible problem of sexism and racism in the OSR. Has this dude even presented any examples of 'problematic' material?

It seems in this day and age you can just throw a generalized slur out there and your tribal confederates will raise up the banners and blast the trumpets of Culture War. I mean, somebody could just as easily go on a social media campaign against the pedophilia championed by the story games community. And their pals could nod and agree and wring their hands over the rampant pedophilia in story games and the story games community, and how every decent person should want to stamp out the pedophilia of story games and their creators. Because it's tremendously important that those of us against pedophilia stand up and oppose it, and warn everyone else who's against pedophilia that they need to keep a vigilant eye on story games creators. And if they kept it up for a while, a lot of gamers might come to believe that pedophilia is rampant in the story games community, if only because of the association of the terms "pedophiles" and "story games".

The lack of examples and evidence shouldn't get in the way of the accusation and the chance to virtue signal. The guy is a real jerk and is saying he has the trademark to the letters OSR and not just his logo. I want him to try to sue just to get his ass handed to him.
