For altering a game world, I have a fondness for the Sphere Of Annilation.  As suggested by an old issue of Dragon, the basic idea is simple:

1) acquire a Sphere
2) take a boat out on the ocean
3) go to the spot on the water over where the ocean depths are deepest
4) drop the Sphere in, let it sink to the bottom of the ocean, destroying all water (and everything else) that comes into contact with it.  As the ocean shrink, watch your campaign world over time mutate into Dark Sun.  :deviousgrin:

This presumes the Sphere is affected by gravity. :p
Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways, it's still rock and roll to me.

You can talk all you want about theory, craft, or whatever. But in the end, it's still just new ways of looking at people playing make-believe and having a good time with their friends. Intellectualize or analyze all you want, but we've been playing the same game since we were 2 years old. We just have shinier books, spend more money, and use bigger words now.

i don't think it is, actually.  :)

i found an adventure in Dungeon #64 where a SoA is planted in the middle of a city by a lich, who tricked it out to continue to expand.  obviously, the PCs have to figure out a way to destroy it before the whole town (country, continent, world??) gets obliterated.  :)

Although I suppose a psychotic mage with a good water breathing spell could take it down to the bottom of the ocean...

Mike, I'm just saying this because no one else did, but that's a pretty cool variant.  The only thing I'd worry about is spells with long-term effects in games with lots of downtime.  How do you handle that?
