This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Voice changer that could imitate a robotic voice?
« on: December 28, 2017, 11:48:28 AM »
Greetings

I am currently desining a custom RPG for a group of friends set in a war-torn futuristic setting, and I was wondering if any of you fine folk know of any voice changers/modulators that could help me portray a robot more convincingly, and I don't mean voice changers that are designed for oneline use, I am more looking for ones that can be used in person (something similar to those found on some costumes).

I am welcome to any alternative suggestions as well, thank you in advance!

I'd suggest using a text-to-speech program, so you type in what it says (probably in advance, to save time), and then the computer _does_ say it.

If the OP has an android device, I did a quick search and there's an app to let you talk like Stephen Hawking. :D

Thank you both very much! I didn't even think of using text to speech.

I have also decided to prerecord some fixed lines for mindless robots and edit them in audacity.

Some of the DMs on Google Hangouts are using voice changers for their mics, for their different NPCs. Looks very easy to switch from one voice to the other. And no phonics texting required. I don't know how much those plugins cost though. I could find out for you if you want.

Oh I don't know about that. A closely related matter also came up in the old Star Wars campaign I ran where a group of slicers created an electronic avatar a la Max Headroom and I needed a recording of their message that didn't sound too much like me.

The android text to speech program worked great in the end.

But yeah it isn't easy imitating an immersive robot voice when you're playing at someone's place instead of trough skype or similar online programs, can't really use a classic voice changer irl.

I am interested if anyone found any other solutions too, you can never have too many robot voices!

Android also has some kind of text translator, where you can type something in English, translate it to some other language, and then have it read out in that language.  I remember once an entire game session derailed when a couple of my players discovered it and wouldn't stop playing around with it.
