This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The future of D&D (and the hobby) looks bright

If the past two weeks are any indication.  Picked up my PHB officially today, and they are selling like hotcakes.

In the past two weeks, I've been running 5e games at my FLGS for brand new players each Wednesday.  Out of the 7 completely new players (never played an RPG before), all 7 said they are having a blast and will be getting the game.

I'd like to say it's because of my awesome DM skills ;), but I can't take all the credit.  5e is very easy to teach and to learn.

I'll be running another game next Wed for new players too.  If this one guy can get 10 new people into the hobby, just imagine what all the other DMs are doing.  I'm thinking we are seeing the beginings of lots of new players, and that gets me stoked.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

Mistwell

It's #1 on Amazon's New Releases List.

It's #3 on Amazon's National Bestseller's List.

It's also in the top 10 for 2014's Amazon's Movers and Shakers list, top 20 in the Most Wished For list.

That's a good start.

And I couldn't afford to get my book this month. SIGH.

To be fair, 4e sold well at the start; it's new and a big name, of course it's going to fly off shelves for the next month or so.

In a few months, when people get it on their tables, will be the interesting thing to see. I agree it's probably going to do well, though.

Funny enough, I asked my FLGS owner this same question.  Since I don't play 4e, I didn't pay a lot of attention.  So I asked him how 4e did by comparison.

He said, "It sold pretty well, but the buzz wasn't anything like this."

I threw myself into 4e wholeheartedly (and I don't regret it), but even in my happy state I sensed something wasn't right with the tone of the chatter at launch time. For what it's worth, it really does feel different this time. More accepting.

I am a bit jealous, because I kinda want my books, but they're not over here yet. Amazon is quoting the end of the month, which I guess is okay; I know some shops will get them sooner though, so I might phone them and ask about mail order.

I'm thinking of going by the FLGS and seeing if they have the PHB.

If it's available in full as a free pdf, I won't cry if I don't get it. Really I just wanna mine it for idears. Zenopus already put up a nice list of 20 backgrounds for B/X - 0e based on Holmes monsters, rules and flavor text. Awesome.

Let's talk in a year or two from now.

Thanks to the brand name, Hasbro could publish a 300 page book saying nothing but "I am a fish" over and over and over and it would likely sell well for the first few weeks.

It's going to take a while for the game to be played a lot and its flaws come to the surface.

And a lot also depends on what sort of support Hasbro gives it.

You're just riding the 5e PHB release-afterglow. The hobby is still doomed. DOOMED!

You're all right.  I should sell them now while I can get most of my money back   :(

Actually never from all indications given to Hasbro the RPG game is incidental to the brand/IP and how they plan to make money concerning D&D.

sigh...I guess it will do.  It may even be the perfect introduction for a new generation of role players.  One thing that confuses me though, why did they up the damage output for just about everything and not up the hit points at first level?  That pretty much makes 5e the deadliest edition of D&D and the roughest on low level characters.  I mean sure the first level fighter can heal himself but nobody else gets to and he's really just two blows from the chewy nought at best.

It seems to be a game built out of bizarre choices.  But then again, D&D always has been.
