This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The benefits of long, hard, detailed character creation?

This is I think the point for me.  Lengthy chargen does not make you more invested in a character, lengthy play does that.

But, if I know as a GM that it will take an hour or more to create a new character that does make me want to avoid that happening, it's too disruptive.  Lethality requires fast chargen, so you can get back into play quickly.

If the game by its nature is one with low mortality, for example an investigation focussed game or intrigue based, then this is less of an issue.  But in an action game I want fast chargen.

But none of this has anything to do with making you care more about the character.

Really the benefit of detailed character creation is when players appreciate that level of detail and that detail is used in the game.

Otherwise, it ends up being mathterbation.

I apologise for the tangent, but I've often been puzzled by statements like the above one (as well as the far more common 'ROXXXORS' or 'ONE!1!ONE', or whatever).

Where did this format originate?  I seems like some generational thing that I completely missed.

Yes, I am a deeply ignorant person.

A lack of moderation doesn\'t mean saying every asshole thing that pops into your head.

Well, I already understood shorthand expressions like 'LOL' and the use of 'U' for 'you', and so forth.

I'm worndering whether there's something special about the all capitalized expressions like 'ROXXXOR' or '!!!!1ONE1!!!!' (I'm probably getting these wrong, but there seems to be a special subcategory here).

assuming the format originated on some odd corner or the net, but imho it was popularized (read: beaten into the ground) by Something Awful's JeffK.

Yeah, and I just use it for the sheer rambunctious joy of being stupid.

Thanks for that link.  I feel less ignorant now.  :)

Amusingly, I always thought that 'pwned' was an oblique chess reference (i.e. deeming another player to be a minor, expendable piece in the game), not a deliberate mispelling of 'owned'.

Okay, my apologies for the tangent.

Don't worry about not knowing about "pwned". Being ignorant of the mindless trivialities cyberbrats invent to amuse themselves and make like they're "Kewl" and "teh r00XX!" is nothing to be ashamed of.
