This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The 3e OGL vs. the 5e OGL - what are the differences?

Calling all theRPGsite publishers and authors!

While I am not a fan of the OGL concept, I acknowledge its value especially through estar's posts over the years. While the original OGL from the 3e era has no end date, I understand (perhaps incorrectly) that 5e has its own OGL.

I would love to hear from those familiar with the original OGL and the 5e OGL to help me (and others) understand what are the differences - both major and minor. I'm not looking for legal advice, but a breakdown and comparison.

Furthermore, I'd love to hear what is missing from the 5e SRD that's included in the 5e core books.

Also, if you have links to excellent blogs which already tackled this subject, please list them.

Thank you all in advance!

As far as I am aware there is no 3e OGL or 5e OGL, there is just the OGL.

So WotC never updated the OGL whatsoever for 5e?

Interesting.

Wasn't the Product Identity section redefined for 5e? Or is that just defined by the SRD? Or perhaps by what's lacking in the SRD?

The 5th edition SRD uses the same license as the D20 SRD; OGL v1.0a. The open content is what different.

The core rules are 95% there (abilities, combat, skills, etc). The list of stuff like sub classes, spells, magic items, and monsters, is missing quite a bit but all the basics are there.

These two site are nice clean references

If one is to muck around with 5e it helps to have editable documents. This the best site I know of to get them: https://ogl-srd5.com/

As for what missing, I don't know of any comprehensive list. There was the5e SRD 1.0 version and the current 5e SRD 1.1 version which includes important things like Eldritch Blast for Warlocks. So a lot of the things you try to find on search results are mixed between the two. There not much urgency because people who care about the missing content release material on the DM's Guild. People who care more about retaining control of their IP will use the SRD as their "rulebook" and ignore what is missing.

They don't use any trademarks in the 5e SRD and the entire 5e SRD is declared open content. So there is no product identity. It is the same situation for the D20 SRD.

Some of what I been working on.

In general I am not concerned with builds or balance only whether it fits with how i view the setting. However it is first draft material and like my Swords & Wizardry material I will tweak things as I see how it operates in a campaign. In addition the second pass will add more background material.

Nice! Don't know how I missed this thread yesterday, but I've been working on some ideas lately for a Feat-based, streamlined version of 5e. Or at least a 5e-inspired system, that's mostly 5e with some tweaks.
