This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Akrasia;267768I will almost certainly pick this up, whereas I probably would not have picked up a set of hardcover books.

Ditto. Smart move to create a decent basic book.

As for me, it's the other way around. I'd like to see the real thing.

Mark, why is it taking you so long to release the basic game, and why will it take you another year with the advanced game?

It sounds as though HM5 is not being built completely from scratch, and getting stuff out in a timely fashion (not the same as rushing it) means raking in $$$ sooner rather than later?

I have to say that I do admire that you guys are putting out a basic book that seems to be a REAL basic book, as in, a playable one, and not crippleware. Its one of the things I've been ranting about for years now.
It would be especially good if you could market this basic set in places outside of the traditional FLGS.

Yeah. While I'm not excited for Hackmaster 5 (or whatever) the basic book does sound pretty appealing. I wouldn't mind it even being a bit shorter, but I do love a good intro game, and it would be even better if it's something that is aimed towards beginers, like Mentzer D&D.

The Basic Set is planned for a 2009 release, with the three Advanced books following as soon as possible (though probably 2010), starting with the Hacklopedia.

Well, we're not dragging our feet, if that's what you mean.  :)  It just takes time for writing and playtesting.  Keep in mind too that we only have three full time employees, plus a monthly magazine that takes up a lot of our time.  (I mention this because some people imagine us to be a big operation.)  Personally, I don't think two years to design, write and publish a game is an unreasonable amount of time.  :)

Mongoose would disagree with you.

Uh...

What was my point, again? :D

Quote from: RPGPundit;266164So you're suggesting it won't actually be the case? I've heard that before, and it leaves me wondering exactly in which way they're planning to leave people feeling screwed: the ones who buy the subtle hinting that "it'll really still be an AD&D game" or the ones who are wishing it won't be... either way, they're going to end up disappointing some of their fans.

"You can please some of the people All of the time; you can please all of the people Some of the time; but you can't please all of the people All of the time."

Words to keep in mind, eh?  I don't think he's suggesting anything, merely restating what the powers that be have already said.  You might need to go straight to Them for the vindication you seek.  I think this game is going to be quite the experience, seeing as how WotC is completely humping the fun right out of D&D with corporate greed tactics.
