Nope, there's actually a huge range. Ironically, what with my loving spicy food, I ended up in the country that is by far the most phobic of spiciness.

Really that perception of latino=spicy is mostly a product of Mexico being next to the United States. Mexicans probably like their food the spiciest of any Latino country.

There's probably some hyperbole involved there as well. I only enjoy my food moderately spicy, where I can still taste the other flavours in the particular dish, and yet I have enjoyed most dishes I had there so far. I know a number of Mexicans not fond of food that is too spicy. My Mexican wife tells me the food gets increasingly spicy as you move into poorer regions.

The most spicy food I ever had was actually Javan-Surinamese. I always have to ask people from Surinam to take it easy on the chilis when they offer to prepare one of their otherwise delicious meals for us.
