This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Gaming is actually pretty okay

Agreed – Leiber has skills. Wildly inconsistent, I think, but when he's good he's very good.

QuoteI like the show; it's cheap, tawdry garbage - porno, really - masquerading as this seasons The Lord of the Rings (No Books, Please), but I know that and don't expect anything better of it.

This is exactly how I approach Game of Thrones. It's pretty much on the same level as Rome (though, the constant debauchery fit Rome a lot better, and I think Rome had an overall better cast). The hardcore Game of Thrones fans are pretty annoying because it's like they haven't read any other books, but it's still fun to watch popcorn-wise.

I love Game of Thrones.

On balance, fantasy lit switching from "Tolkien with the serial numbers filed off" to "European history with the serial numbers filed off" is a lateral move at best.
D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

For the record, I think the RPG is and is always meant to be something that is not intended to be "educational".  Its a game and trying to make it out as something "greater" than that always leads down a path to idiocy.

That said, I certainly think RPGs can inculcate both certain skills, knowledge, and "values", not as the goal but as a side-effect.  It just so happens that the skills, values, and knowledge it imparts tend to be of a classic sort, and tend on the whole to be precisely the kind of "values" that a certain sector of society (including a certain sector who have decided to involve themselves in the RPG scene) despise and have ideologically worked very hard at trying to disparage.
