Savage Rifts - anyone played it?

Curious about Rifts for Savage Worlds. So, I saw the thread on KS playing it a page or two back but since this seemed to go off in other directions...
Has anyone played this? If so, is it any good? Any major rules issues apparent?

Spinachcat

I am definitely interested in some Actual Play comparisons.

Spike

usually I"m pretty quick out the gate with a hot new gaming product (I'm a bit of a slut that way...), but I turn my nose up at the far too common (read Prole) Savage Worlds section of my local gaming store. So while I'm a die hard Rifts fan, this is a product I will not be spreading my legs... I mean wallet... for.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

Got it, and want to run it, but not only do I have my hands full with a Godbound game, I'm also not sure I can do Rifts with the same flair of yesteryear. It got me to re-read my old Rifts stuff and wonder whether I can pull it off once more.

One thing is certain, though: when/if I run it, I'm dialing it back to 102 P.A. (not crazy about either the Coalition War Campaign look or the Tolkeen/Free Quebec metaplot).

Don't care for either system/setting. Not sure why it was made a thing.

Lol.

I played in a game at a con last two weeks ago. It's Savage Worlds. It doesn't feel like Rifts to me but that could be the GM.

I backed the KS and have all the current pdfs, but am waiting for print copies before trying anything. I hate pdf.

The metaplot of Savage Rifts is pretty bad, but there are some cool features that sets it apart from both Rifts and Savage Worlds. The Iconic Frameworks feature is basically Rifts OCC/RCCs, instead of the normal Savage Worlds character creation. Individual classes have interesting features; the Juicer's Burn die is a great idea and would work well in a regular Rifts game. As with all Savage Worlds settings, there are new Edges and Hindrances and minor rules alterations.

From what I've seen, it captures a lot of the look and feel of Rifts. Although using a system such as Savage Worlds, there is going to be a lot less GM handwaving and spot ruling, which is one of the quirks of Rifts I liked when I was younger.

This did catch my eye. I don't know Savage Worlds, but the mechanic sounds interesting.
The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

Thanks I guess.
Not planning on interfering, but I read through 20 or so pages thus far starting from roughly when it was out (so far, 180-200). Main takeouts for me were. "Everything is squishier now" (because SW) and also there seems to be a lot of "Build" type business going on - since there's more customizability people are busily finding the most overpowered options, with PEG doing some errata even. Hmm.

a short recap of yesterday's game session.

Four of us plus one GM. A couple of them are real Savage Worlds experts (or, at least have played it a lot and seem to know the rules pretty well). Everyone seemed more familiar with Rifts that I am.  :?

Rifts is certainly wacky. I had read this thread and a few other places so I felt I had a decent feel for the style of play, but the scenario called for knowledge of the various factions and some diplomacy between then so I was a bit out of my element there. After the game I mentioned this frustration and they gladly recapped info about the factions, but it didn't do me a lot of good after the fact.

I've only played a few sessions of Savage Worlds and am certainly not an expert on the game yet, but SW seemed like a good fit for the setting. One of the guys at the table said he played the Palladium version and liked this one better because action flowed better. I guess part of the schtick for Rifts is that you have absurd weapons but they have absurd armor so it sort of works out. I was going toe-to-toe with a cyborg baddun and for several rounds neither of us could hurt the other, but the rest of my team managed to mop up on the mooks pretty quickly. (Funny story there is where the GM misread the scenario info and thought that "3 plus one per player" meant 3+1=4 per player so he threw 16 mooks at us instead of only 7. He was embarrassed after that, particularly since my character died in that battle.) This particular battle raged for over an hour, which was sort of unfortunate since we didn't have time to finish the rest of the scenario, and that surprised me since I always thought SW battles were supposed to be fast and furious.

Anyway, my first ever experience with Rifts was a fun one and I may pick up the SW rulebooks when they hit the store. Folks at the table said they would be interested in playing more of it, too.
